My dearest Lucy,
Just over a week since our separation and already you are greatly missed. Do not doubt for a moment that I do not think of you each day and in some way regret that I had to send you away as I did. But, you are safe and that is what matters. I, too, am safe and well. Do not worry on my account.
If the news has not yet reached you, let me be the first to tell you that it is official. Richmond has been voted the capital of our new Confederacy. The decision came the day before yesterday and they hope to have things well in-place by the end of this month. More fortifications are going up
