Chapter Nineteen Lucy opened her eyes with a start. The scent of wood smoke was warm and rich and slowly the soft snap and hiss of the fireplace logs burning reached her. Bright sunlight was streaming through the lace curtains. She could hear the unmistakable cluck-chirp of the robins in the garden below. Lucy turned her head towards the window and saw the Creole next to her in the Master’s big bed. A smile played on Lucy’s lips as she watched Cassy sleep. “Cass.” As if she had not been sleeping at all, Cassy’s eyes opened. “A drink of water, please?” A few minutes later, Lucy rested her head back on the propped up pillows, her thirst quenched. “What day is it?” “Monday.” “Good.
