The week started normally.
At least, that was what Lily thought.
Students were still busy with graduation preparations. Teachers were giving final instructions. Everyone seemed excited about what would happen after school ended.
For the first time in days, Lily felt a little calmer.
She had made her decision.
She wasn’t going to tell Ethan how she felt.
It hurt, but at least she knew where she stood.
Or so she thought.
That morning, Ethan seemed quieter than usual.
Not sad.
Just distracted.
Lily noticed it immediately.
Of course she did.
She always noticed when something was off with him.
“You okay?” she asked during break.
Ethan looked up from his phone.
“Yeah.”
But his answer came too quickly.
Lily frowned.
“You sure?”
He hesitated.
Then nodded.
“Yeah.”
Something about it didn’t feel right.
But before she could ask more, Daniel appeared and dragged Ethan away for something.
The conversation ended there.
Unfortunately, the strange feeling stayed with her.
By lunchtime, she had noticed it again.
Ethan laughed when people joked.
He smiled when people spoke to him.
But his mind seemed somewhere else.
Even Sophie noticed.
“He’s acting weird.”
Lily looked across the cafeteria.
“I know.”
For the rest of the afternoon, that uncomfortable feeling followed her around.
Like a storm she couldn’t see yet.
Then came the final lesson of the day.
The moment that changed everything.
Their teacher had barely started speaking when Ethan suddenly raised his hand.
“Miss, can I say something?”
The classroom became quiet.
The teacher looked surprised.
“Of course.”
Ethan stood up slowly.
And for the first time since Lily met him, he looked nervous.
Really nervous.
A few students exchanged confused looks.
Daniel frowned.
Even Sophie sat up straighter.
Lily’s stomach tightened.
Something was wrong.
She could feel it.
Ethan took a breath.
Then finally spoke.
“My family is moving.”
The room went silent.
Completely silent.
For a second nobody reacted.
Like nobody had understood what he meant.
Then voices started appearing.
“What?”
“Moving where?”
“When?”
“Are you serious?”
Lily couldn’t move.
She couldn’t even think.
The words echoed inside her head.
My family is moving.
Moving.
Moving.
The teacher looked shocked.
“You’re leaving?”
Ethan nodded.
“After graduation.”
The room exploded into noise again.
Questions came from every direction.
But Lily couldn’t hear most of them.
Her ears were ringing.
Her chest felt tight.
Too tight.
After graduation.
Not next year.
Not someday.
After graduation.
In a few weeks.
A few weeks.
That was all.
She stared at Ethan.
Waiting for him to laugh and say it was a joke.
Waiting for someone to correct him.
Nobody did.
Because it wasn’t a joke.
It was real.
Painfully real.
Eventually the lesson ended.
Students immediately surrounded Ethan with questions.
Daniel looked like he had been punched.
“You never told me.”
“I only found out recently,” Ethan admitted.
“Where are you going?”
“Manchester.”
The answer hit Lily like another blow.
Manchester.
Far enough.
Far enough that everything would change.
Far enough that seeing him wouldn’t be easy anymore.
Far enough that goodbye would become real.
The classroom felt smaller suddenly.
Harder to breathe in.
Lily quietly gathered her things.
She didn’t trust herself to speak.
Not yet.
Not when her heart felt like it was breaking.
She slipped out of the room before anyone noticed.
Or at least she thought nobody noticed.
“Lily.”
His voice stopped her halfway down the corridor.
She froze.
Then turned around.
Ethan was standing there.
Looking worried.
For a moment neither of them spoke.
“What happened?” he asked.
Lily forced a smile.
“Nothing.”
Even she could hear how fake it sounded.
Ethan stepped closer.
“Lily.”
That one word almost destroyed her.
Because suddenly all the feelings she had spent months hiding came rushing back.
The fear.
The love.
The hope.
The regret.
All of it.
“You didn’t tell me,” she said quietly.
Ethan looked down.
“I wanted to.”
“When?”
He didn’t answer.
Because there wasn’t a good answer.
Lily laughed softly.
A sad laugh.
The kind that hurt more than crying.
“Wow.”
Ethan looked miserable.
“I found out a few days ago.”
A few days.
The same few days she had spent avoiding him.
The same few days she had convinced herself to stay silent.
Life suddenly felt cruel.
Really cruel.
“I didn’t know how to tell you.”
His voice was quiet now.
Honest.
And somehow that made it worse.
Because she believed him.
Lily swallowed hard.
“Manchester.”
“Yeah.”
The word felt heavy between them.
Permanent.
Final.
For a moment neither of them spoke.
Students passed by in the corridor, laughing and talking.
The world kept moving.
But Lily felt stuck.
Because she finally understood something.
She had been so afraid of losing Ethan by confessing.
She had spent months protecting herself from rejection.
Months hiding.
Months staying silent.
And now life had done something she never expected.
It was taking him away anyway.
As Ethan stood in front of her, Lily felt something dangerous grow inside her chest.
Regret.
The kind of regret that stays with people for years.
Because for the first time, she wasn’t wondering whether she should tell him how she felt.
She was wondering if she was running out of time.
And that thought terrified her.
More than anything ever had.
