Chapter 22 The Last Goodbye

679 Words
Graduation came and went faster than anyone expected. One moment they were receiving certificates. The next moment people were hugging, crying and taking final pictures. Everything felt rushed. Like time was moving too quickly. Then suddenly there was only one day left. One day before Ethan left. The next afternoon, Lily received a message. Ethan: Meet me at the park Her heart immediately started racing. She knew why. This was it. The last time. The final goodbye. When she arrived, Ethan was already sitting on a bench near the lake. For a few seconds neither of them spoke. They simply looked at each other. Both knowing what tomorrow meant. “You came,” Ethan said. “You asked.” A small smile appeared on his face. They spent the next hour talking about everything and nothing. School memories. Teachers they hated. Funny moments. The festival. Late-night conversations. Anything except the one thing neither wanted to discuss. Tomorrow. Eventually the conversation faded. Silence settled between them. The sun was beginning to set. And somehow that made everything worse. Ethan looked out across the water. “I still can’t believe I’m leaving.” Lily forced a smile. “Neither can I.” For a moment he didn’t speak. Then he looked at her. Directly at her. “I’m really going to miss you.” The words hit her harder than anything else. Because she could hear the honesty in his voice. He meant it. Every word. Lily looked away before he could see the tears forming. “I’m going to miss you too.” The silence returned. Longer this time. Heavier. And then something inside Lily finally broke. All the fear. All the waiting. All the months of hiding. It suddenly felt pointless. Because tomorrow he would be gone. Tomorrow this chance would disappear forever. Her heart pounded. The words were there again. Waiting. Just like they had been in the hall weeks ago. This time there would be no interruption. No Sophie. No Daniel. No excuse. Just the truth. Lily turned toward him. “Ethan…” He immediately looked at her. “Yeah?” Her throat tightened. She could do it. She could finally tell him. She loved him. She had loved him for months. Maybe years. And if she didn’t say it now, she might regret it for the rest of her life. The words reached the edge of her lips. “I…” Her voice broke. Ethan’s eyes never left hers. For one terrifying second, it felt like the whole world had stopped. Like he was waiting. Like he already knew. Like he wanted her to finish. But fear returned. One last time. And it won. Lily looked away. “I hope everything works out for you.” The moment the words left her mouth, she hated them. Because they weren’t what she wanted to say. Not even close. Ethan stared at her for a second. Something unreadable crossed his face. Disappointment. Maybe. Maybe not. Then he smiled softly. “Thanks.” The sun disappeared below the horizon. The moment was gone. Just like that. Eventually Ethan stood up. “I should go.” Lily nodded. Neither moved. Neither wanted to be the first. Then finally Ethan stepped forward and wrapped his arms around her. A hug. Simple. Friendly. And somehow the most painful thing Lily had ever experienced. She held on longer than she should have. Knowing this was the last time. When they finally pulled apart, both of them looked emotional. Neither admitted it. “Goodbye, Lily.” Goodbye. The word shattered something inside her. She forced herself to smile. “Goodbye, Ethan.” Then he turned and walked away. Lily watched him go. Step by step. Further and further. Until he disappeared completely. And only then did she let herself cry. Because Ethan Blake was gone. And he would never know the truth. Or at least… That’s what Lily believed as she stood there watching the empty path. Completely unaware that Ethan was carrying a secret of his own. A secret that would change everything
