The night had been long and heavy. Dolphus’s sharp face, usually calm and proud, now carried marks of weariness. His clear eyes were veined with red, proof that sleep had not touched him. He had stayed alert. “Is Elena safe?” Richard broke the silence. The man had been at Dolphus’s side for many years. He knew Dolphus’s world, his secrets, his silence.
