It was a tense trip to my flat, with neither of us daring to break the uncomfortable quiet. I was taken aback by Daniel's admission about his former partner. This was not anticipated.
I couldn't stop asking myself why now. What was it that she desired? Above all, how was I meant to handle this sudden turn of events?
As soon as we entered the room, Daniel went directly to the sofa and fell back on the cushions, untying his tie. With a tone that did not allow for debate, he said, "We need to talk."
"What about your former partner?" I asked, attempting to control my anxiousness.
Grasping his hair with his palm, he nodded. Lily is her name. We didn't exactly part ways well when we broke up, but that was approximately six months ago. Ever since, she has been attempting to reenter my life.
Why is she interested in meeting right now? I forced myself to sit across from him.
"Therein lies the issue. He looked frustrated as he said, "I have no idea." But she won't make this simple, whatever it is. To put it mildly, Lily is tenacious.
His tone was tense, with a trace of irritation mixed with something more. "Now, what should we do?" I questioned, trying not to panic as the truth of our predicament started to set in.
Daniel cast a penetrating glance at me. "We follow the plan. We need to make her understand that you and I are in this together. She will use the slightest suspicion against us to our advantage.
It turned my stomach to think about him confronting his ex, a woman who was still in love with him. But I was at a loss for what to do. I couldn't leave now that we were in this together. I answered, sounding more composed than I felt, "Okay." However, how can we convince her of it?
Daniel leaned forward, his face grave. "We have to be very, very persuasive. It entails conducting themselves like a true pair both in public and privately. We must get to know one another's habits, peculiarities, and the little details that only a pair knows about one another. She'll be able to tell if we don't.
Seeing the seriousness of his words, I nodded. It was more than simply holding hands or whispering sweet nothings. We needed to integrate into one another's lives, mixing fact and fantasy until we were unable to distinguish between the two.
Where should we begin, then? With a mixture of nervousness and resolve, I asked.
His eyes sparkled with mischief as he grinned. "Let me just say that I'm not a great cook to begin with."
I laughed, feeling a little less tension between us. "Nice to know. I'm a morning person, so if you're not into early wake-up calls, you're going to get a rough stirring. You should certainly be aware of this.
With a sincere grin softening his face, he said, "Duly noted." Our predicament seemed to lose some of its weight for a little while and take on a lighter, even humorous quality.
However, the respite was just temporary. There was stillness until a text alert sounded, and Daniel's grin vanished as he took a quick look at his phone. With a tight voice once more, he replied, "It's her." "She's waiting at the restaurant for us."
Panic struck me hard. "Us?"
He got up quickly and nodded. We act as a team if we're going to do this. Additionally, it would be preferable if you met her right away to avoid having to deal with her again.
With a deep sip, the understanding of what I was about to meet began to sink in. "All right," I said, trying not to lose my cool. "Lead the way."
My mind was preoccupied with the upcoming meeting on the journey to the restaurant. The sensation that I was stepping into a trap where the distinction between the genuine and the phony was perilously blurry persisted.
As we entered, Daniel held my hand tightly and reassuringly when we got there. There was gentle music playing in the background since the restaurant had dark lighting. I looked across the room, trying to find the lady who was going to put our deception to the test, and my pulse raced.
Daniel pointed to a table at the rear and said, "There she is." As we drew nearer, a confident and strikingly beautiful lady sat waiting, staring at us.
Her voice was cold but had a deeper undertone, like maybe contempt, when she said, "Daniel." Her gaze shifted to me, evaluating, concluding. "And who is that?"
Daniel put his arm around my waist and said, "This is Rachel." "My sweetheart."
A little smirk played at the corners of Lily's lips as her gaze narrowed. "You know what, girlfriend? That is a surprise.
Even though it seemed forced, I managed to grin. I choked out, trying not to show the nervousness eating at my insides, "Nice to meet you."
Lily gave me a brief period of her attention before shifting it back to Daniel. She said, sounding almost accusing, "You move fast." "From what I understand, you were vowing to never get into any relationships."
Daniel said in a calm tone, "People change." "It's just that Rachel and I click."
Lily pointed to the vacant chairs, but her grin did not quite reach her eyes. Alright, let's get moving. Please sit down and tell me everything about your "clicking."
I had the impression that this wasn't going to be a casual encounter as soon as we sat down. Whatever Lily was up to, it wasn't going to work out well for any of us.
I was able to see Lily's phone screen as she was texting someone beneath the table while the discussion went on. My
spine tingled as I saw "Daniel's mother" appear on the screen.
