Chapter 8: A Wounded Day

1409 Words
I woke up feeling strange. My reflection surprised me. I looked prettier, somehow. But inside, I was still me. Still unsure. Then I heard them. The girls who always bullied me. My heart raced. I wanted to run. "Well, well," the leader sneered. "Look who thinks she's hot stuff now."I kept my head down. Tried to walk faster. They blocked my path." Where do you think you're going?" one asked. Her voice was mean. Jealous." P-please," I stammered. "I just want to go to work." They laughed. It was an ugly sound. The girl said to the girl in the lead, "Oh my God, Ashley, look, the sloppy willow dares to talk back to you." Her name was Ashley, I thought it took me this long to know her name. However, she seemed to be very angry when she heard, "Oh, we'll let you go. After we teach you a lesson." They grabbed me. I was too scared to fight back. They dragged me into an alley. I was shaking. "Leave me alone, Ashley," I muttered, my voice barely above a whisper. "Oh, we will," Ashley chimed in, her voice dripping with fake sweetness. "After we teach you a little lesson about respect." Before I could react, Ashley lunged at me, her perfectly manicured nails raking across my cheek. I cried out in surprise and pain, stumbling backwards. They were on me then, a whirlwind of perfectly styled hair and expensive perfume. I tried to fight back, to protect myself, but they were too strong, too many. Their slaps and punches rained down on me, each blow a searing reminder of my own vulnerability. I curled into a ball, trying to shield my face and stomach. The pain was overwhelming, a sharp, burning sensation that spread through my body. I tasted blood, warm and metallic, and my vision blurred with tears. I felt a surge of despair, a wave of hopelessness that threatened to drown me. Then, as suddenly as it began, it stopped. The blows ceased, and the laughter faded away. I cautiously uncurled, my body aching and my head spinning. Through my blurry vision, I saw a figure standing between me and my attackers. It was Lucian. His face was a mask of fury, his eyes blazing with an intensity that made me shiver. He moved with a swiftness that was almost inhuman, his voice a low growl that sent shivers down my spine. "Get away from her," he snarled, his voice laced with menace. Ashley and her friends, for once, looked intimidated. They exchanged nervous glances, their bravado melting away like snow in the sun. Without a word, they turned and fled, their high heels clicking a hasty retreat on the pavement. I remained on the ground, my body trembling with shock and pain. Lucian knelt beside me, his expression softening as he took in my battered appearance. His touch was gentle as he brushed a stray strand of hair from my face. "Willow, are you alright?" he asked, his voice filled with concern. He carefully lifted me into his arms, cradling me against his chest. His warmth enveloped me, a stark contrast to the coldness of the pavement. I clung to him, burying my face in his shirt, seeking solace in his strength. He carried me all the way home, his movements sure and steady. I felt safe in his arms, protected from the harsh realities of the world outside. As we entered my small apartment, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for his presence. He gently laid me on the couch, his eyes searching mine with an intensity that made my heart flutter. "Let me take care of your wounds," he murmured, his voice soothing and gentle. He disappeared into the bathroom, returning with a first-aid kit. His touch was light as he cleaned the cuts and bruises on my face and body. I winced as the antiseptic stung, but his gentle words and reassuring presence helped to ease the pain. As he tended to my wounds, I couldn't help but steal glances at him. His focused expression, the way his brow furrowed in concentration, the gentleness of his touch -- it all sent a strange warmth through me. I felt a connection to him, a pull that was both exciting and terrifying. "I'm sorry," I whispered. "I'm so weak. I should've..." Lucian shook his head. "No, Willow. You're not weak. You're just... new to this. It takes time." I looked at him. Confused. "New to what? What's happening to me, Lucian?" He sighed. Sat next to me. Took my hand. "There's so much to tell you. About who you are. What are you?" My heart pounded. "Tell me. Please." Lucian nodded. "You're... special, Willow. You're a werewolf. Like me." I blinked. It sounded crazy. But after what I experienced... "How? Why?" "You were born this way," Lucian said. His voice was gentle. Soothing. "Your family... they were werewolves too. But there was an accident. You were the only survivor." Tears filled my eyes. "My family? They're all... gone?" Lucian pulled me close. Hold me. "I'm so sorry, Willow. But you're not alone. You have me now." I cried into his chest. For the family, I couldn't remember. For life, I never knew. When I calmed down, Lucian started talking. About werewolves. Our nature. Our customs." We're not monsters," he said. "We're just... different. Stronger. Faster. But we have to be careful. Keep our secret." I listened. Fascinated. Terrified. "But why can't I remember?" Lucian hesitated. Just for a second. "The trauma of the accident... it locked your memories. But now you're awakening. Becoming who you were meant to be."I nodded. It made sense. Kind of. "And you? Why are you here?" He smiled. Soft. Warm. "To protect you. To teach you. To... be with you." My heart fluttered. As he spoke, his eyes met mine, and I felt a spark ignite between us. The air crackled with unspoken emotions, and I found myself leaning closer to him, drawn in by his magnetic presence. His hand reached out, gently caressing my cheek. I closed my eyes, savoring the warmth of his touch. I felt a longing deep within me, a desire that I had never experienced before. He leaned in, his lips brushing against mine. I responded instinctively, my body yearning for his closeness. The kiss was fire. Passion. Need. My hands tangled in his hair. His arms pulled me close. We fell back on the couch. Hands exploring. Hearts racing. It felt right. Perfect. As Lucian's hand just unzipped my skirt, a knock at the door. We jumped apart. Guilty. Breathless. "Willow?" It was Zoe. "Are you okay? You didn't show up for work."I panicked. Looked at Lucian. He squeezed my hand. Reassuring. "Coming!" I called out. I fixed my hair. My clothes. I opened the door. Zoe took in my appearance. Lucian on the couch. Her eyes narrowed." What's going on?" she asked. Suspicious. Protective. "Oh my goodness, how did you get injured?""I met the girls, they hit me, Lucian saved me." I explained to Zoe that he had just stayed to help me with my wounds. Zoe didn't look convinced. "Uh-huh. Does this require unbuttoning the shirt?" I blushed. Couldn't meet her eyes. "It's not... we weren't... Lucian stood. Smooth. Charming. "I was just leaving. Feel better, Willow." He left. I watched him go. Already missing his presence. Zoe rounded on me. "Willow, what's going on? You're acting strangely. Looking different. And now this guy..."I sighed. Sat down. How could I explain? "It's complicated, Zoe. I'm... going through some changes." Zoe sat beside me. Took my hand. "You can tell me anything. You know that, right?"I nodded. Wanted to tell her everything. But Lucian's warning echoed in my head. Keep the secret. "I'm just... figuring things out," I said finally. "About myself. My past. Lucian's helping me." Zoe frowned. "Just be careful, okay? I don't want you to get hurt."I hugged her. Grateful for her friendship. Her concern. "I will. I promise." After Zoe left, I thought about everything. My newfound identity. My lost family. Lucian. It was overwhelming. Scary. Exciting. I looked in the mirror again. Saw the changes. Subtle, but there. I was Willow. Werewolf. Survivor. And for the first time in my life, I felt like I might belong somewhere. "I'm Willow," I said to myself in the mirror, word by word, "I'm Willow Moonheart."
