Chapter 5: Final Pursuit
Lydia and Kai stood in the shadows of the abandoned warehouse, the night wind howling through the open space, carrying a chill. Lydia pulled her coat tighter around her and gazed resolutely at the worn-out warehouse doors ahead.
“Here it is,” she whispered, her tone resolute. “The Wolff Family’s treasure trove.”
Kai nodded, his eyes scanning the surroundings warily. “You sure?”
“The system doesn’t make mistakes,” Lydia replied, though a sliver of unease pricked at her. She could sense that tonight would be a tough battle.
They approached the warehouse stealthily, Kai leading the way, Lydia following close behind. Kai gently pushed the door open, and they slipped inside, trying to make as little noise as possible. The interior was dimly lit, with only a few beams of moonlight filtering through the broken windows, illuminating piles of old crates and abandoned machinery.
“We’ll split up,” Kai whispered. “But stay alert.”
Lydia agreed with a nod, switching on her system interface to activate “Clue Scan.” Light flickered in the darkness, outlining the contours of items hidden in the shadows.
【Clue Scan】
Multiple metal safes detected, likely containing the treasure.
Hidden cameras detected, located at...
Suddenly, hurried footsteps sounded from deep within the warehouse. Lydia and Kai quickly hid behind a pile of crates. Several dark figures appeared in the moonlight, enforcers from the Wolff Family.
“They got here first,” Lydia whispered, her heart tightening.
“Seems like it,” Kai responded, a cold glint in his eyes. “But we won’t let them succeed.”
They held their breath, observing the enforcers’ movements. The enforcers seemed to be searching for something, their actions rough and hasty, occasionally whispering to each other.
“They’re after the treasure,” Lydia said. “We need to stop them.”
Kai nodded, his gaze locking onto an enforcer manipulating a safe. “I’ll handle them. You find the treasure.”
“Be careful,” Lydia whispered, then silently moved towards the other side of the warehouse.
She cautiously avoided the cameras, guided by the system to a concealed safe. Quickly entering the system-provided password, the safe door swung open, revealing a hoard of gleaming jewels and gold coins.
“Found it!” Lydia’s heart leaped with joy, but she immediately realized this might only be the beginning. The Wolff Family wouldn’t give up so easily; they would return.
At that moment, sounds of combat erupted from the other side of the warehouse. Lydia’s heart clenched; she knew Kai was in trouble. She quickly stowed the treasure in her backpack and rushed towards the sounds of the fight.
She saw Kai surrounded by several enforcers, but he was still putting up a fierce resistance. Without hesitation, Lydia charged in, using the system’s “Micro-Expression Analysis” to quickly gauge the enforcers’ attack intentions and help Kai deflect them one by one.
“We need to get out of here now!” Lydia shouted, sensing more Wolff Family members approaching.
Kai nodded, and they made a swift retreat, but at the warehouse entrance, they encountered the head of the Wolff Family—a cold, ruthless man.
“Did you really think you could stop us?” the leader sneered, his eyes filled with murderous intent.
“Tonight, none of you are leaving here alive.” He waved his hand, and more enforcers swarmed in from all directions.
Lydia and Kai stood back to back, knowing this would be a battle for survival.
