Chapter 2: The Killer’s Game
Kai didn't move. His eyes, sharp and assessing, studied me as if I were a puzzle he hadn't expected to find.
"Talk?" he echoed, stepping forward. His boots clicked against the warped wooden floor. "You think you have something I want to hear?"
I stayed seated, forcing my breathing to remain even. My mind raced. This was the man who had been sent to kill me. And yet, here I was—alive.
Why?
I needed to find out. And I needed to survive.
The voice in my head buzzed again.
【System Alert】
Begin Tutorial Mission: Escape the Killer.
Objective: Identify escape routes and hidden threats.
Available Skill: Clue Scan.
A translucent overlay flickered across my vision. A soft pulse of light traced the outlines of the room—furniture, walls, even the floorboards. Then it stopped, highlighting the window behind Kai, the door to my left, and a faint smudge on the doorknob.
Blood.
I blinked.
It wasn’t much, but it was enough.
"You’re not here to kill me," I said slowly, testing the words. "If you were, I’d already be dead."
Kai’s smirk faltered for a fraction of a second. "Clever girl."
He leaned against the wall, arms crossed. "But you’re still in my hands. What makes you think I won’t finish the job?"
I stood, keeping my distance. "Because you haven’t already. And because you’re curious."
His eyes narrowed. "Curious about what?"
"About why I’m still alive," I said. "And why I’m not screaming."
Silence stretched between us, thick and tense.
Then Kai laughed—a low, rough sound. "You’re not what I expected."
I took a cautious step forward. "And you’re not just a killer."
His expression darkened. "Don’t flatter yourself."
The system chimed again.
【Clue Scan Complete】
Detected blood residue on doorknob (traces of previous victim).
Window lock is rusted—can be forced open.
Faint tire tracks visible outside window—vehicle parked for over 12 hours.
I absorbed the information. There was a way out. But I wasn’t ready yet. I needed more.
"Let me go," I said, watching his reaction. "Or kill me. But don’t waste time pretending this is just a job."
Kai pushed off the wall, walking slowly toward me. He stopped just a foot away, close enough that I could see the flecks of gold in his dark eyes.
"I like you," he said, voice low. "That’s a problem."
Then he stepped back and turned toward the door. "You’ve got five minutes. Try to run, and I won’t be as generous next time."
He left.
The moment the door clicked shut, I moved.
I scanned the room again, memorizing the weak spots. The rusted window lock, the bloodied doorknob, the faint tire tracks outside.
I wasn’t just going to escape.
I was going to survive.
And maybe, just maybe, I’d figure out how to use this system before it was too late.
