Maruma had continued to laugh until the king of Serusa and his only son were forced to ask almost at the same time, "What is this?" The king had wanted to rise when he began coughing. Initially the cough was not severe and nobody thought for once that it would escalate to something disastrous. The king, after having risen from his seat coughed and held his chest.
