Chapter 59: Tangled In The Game

310 Words
Maria’s mind was a storm, yet she forced herself to walk calmly through the crowded hallway. Every step felt heavier, every glance from strangers like a whisper of suspicion. Daniel was somewhere in the building—she could feel it. But so was someone else. The strange note she had found earlier still burned in her pocket. You’re closer to the truth than you think. The handwriting was jagged, almost rushed, as if the writer had been afraid of being caught. She had no idea who it came from, but she knew one thing—it wasn’t Daniel. Just then, a warm hand brushed against hers in passing. She spun around, ready to confront whoever it was, but the crowd swallowed them instantly. Her pulse jumped. “Looking for someone?” a voice drawled from behind her. Maria turned to find Daniel leaning casually against the wall, his eyes glinting with that same dangerous mix of charm and secrets. “We need to talk,” she said, her voice sharper than she intended. “Talk?” His smirk deepened. “Or are you finally ready to admit you’ve been following my trail?” Maria clenched her jaw. “You’re playing with something dangerous, Daniel. And it’s not just about me anymore.” Before he could respond, a loud crash echoed from the far end of the hallway. People screamed, scattering in all directions. Daniel’s expression shifted—just for a moment—into something deadly serious. “Stay here,” he ordered, but Maria didn’t listen. She moved with him, side by side, into the chaos. As they turned the corner, she saw a shadowy figure vanish through the exit door. Her instincts screamed at her—that was the real threat. And if they didn’t act now, the game they’d been playing might turn into something they couldn’t escape.
