Chapter 43: The Confession Game

376 Words
The lunch break had started like any other, with chatter, laughter, and the scraping of chairs against the floor. But Maria couldn’t relax. Daniel was sitting directly across from her, his elbows resting on the table, his eyes locked on her like a secret he couldn’t wait to tell. She tried to focus on the random conversations around her, but his gaze was impossible to ignore. It wasn’t intense in an intimidating way — it was… searching, like he was looking for something she was hiding. Emeka, of course, noticed everything. He leaned back in his chair, a sly grin curling on his lips. “You people look too serious. Let’s play a game,” he declared. “What game?” someone asked. “Truth or dare,” Emeka said, clapping once like a teacher starting a lesson. “No boring answers, no skipping questions. If you choose truth, you tell the truth. If you choose dare, you do it. Simple.” Everyone murmured in excitement. Games like this had a dangerous way of dragging hidden feelings into the open. Maria’s pulse quickened, but she forced a neutral expression. The questions began harmlessly — favorite colors, funniest memories, silly dares like making a chicken noise in front of the class. But then Emeka turned toward her. “Maria,” he said with a glint in his eyes, “truth or dare?” She hesitated. “Truth.” Emeka smirked, leaning forward. “Is there someone here you’ve been thinking about more than you should?” The air shifted instantly. Her breath caught in her throat. She could feel the weight of several pairs of eyes on her, but Daniel’s stare was the heaviest. Her heart pounded. She could lie. She could laugh it off. But for some reason, her lips curved into a faint smile and she said, “Yes.” The group erupted in noise — laughter, teasing, exaggerated gasps. Someone tapped her shoulder, another chanted, “Name! Name! Name!” Maria only shrugged, her eyes flicking briefly to Daniel before looking away. She didn’t need to say his name. The way his lips curved into that knowing, dangerous smile told her he already knew. And maybe… he liked the answer more than she realized.
