Chapter 47: The Unexpected Visitor

363 Words
Maria barely had time to catch her breath after Daniel’s bitter confession when the sound of a knock echoed through the house. It was firm—too firm—like the person behind it wasn’t here for a friendly visit. Daniel froze mid-step, his eyes narrowing as if calculating whether to open the door or not. “Are you expecting anyone?” Maria asked, her voice low but sharp with curiosity. “No,” Daniel replied, his jaw tightening. Before Maria could protest, the knock came again, harder this time. Daniel reluctantly moved forward, unlocked the door, and swung it open. Standing there was a tall man in a dark suit, his eyes cold and calculating. “Daniel,” the man said smoothly, his voice dripping with authority. “It’s been a while.” Maria’s heartbeat quickened. She didn’t know the man, but the tension in the air was thick enough to choke on. “What do you want, Victor?” Daniel’s voice was dangerously calm, but Maria noticed the subtle clench of his fists. Victor’s gaze slid over to Maria, lingering longer than was polite. “I see you’ve found yourself… a distraction,” he smirked. “But you and I have unfinished business.” Maria’s stomach twisted. Something about this man screamed trouble—deep, ugly trouble. Daniel stepped forward, blocking Victor’s view of her. “This isn’t the time or place,” he warned. Victor chuckled darkly. “It never is. But you know what happens when people try to run from me.” The air seemed to drop a few degrees, and Maria suddenly understood—this wasn’t just an unexpected visitor. This was a threat. And if Daniel didn’t handle it right, both of them could be in more danger than she’d ever imagined. Daniel’s grip tightened, pulling me closer. His voice was low. “Maria, you think you know everything… but you have no idea what I’m capable of.” My heart raced. “I’m not afraid of you,” I lied. A faint smirk crossed his lips. “We’ll see.” He let go and walked away, leaving me with one thought—this wasn’t over.
