Chapter 92: A Fragile Promise

329 Words
The evening air carried a strange stillness, as though the campus itself was holding its breath. Maria walked along the narrow path behind the library, her steps quick, her arms hugging her books close to her chest. She had told herself she wouldn’t think of Daniel today, wouldn’t let him live rent-free in her head—but every heartbeat betrayed her. She froze when she heard footsteps behind her. Turning slightly, she saw him. Daniel. He slowed when their eyes met, his usual careless grin replaced by something quieter, almost unsure. “Maria,” he said softly, “can we talk?” Her chest tightened. “About what? Another clever line? Another reason for me to let my guard down?” Daniel shook his head, stepping closer. His voice was lower than she’d ever heard it. “No lines. No games. I just… I don’t want to lose the chance to mean something real to you.” The words hit her like a storm. Real. She wanted to believe him, but the walls she had built didn’t crumble so easily. She hugged her books tighter, fighting the warmth rising in her chest. “Promises are easy to make, Daniel. They’re harder to keep.” For a moment, silence stretched between them. Then Daniel held out his hand—not to grab, not to force—just an open palm waiting. “Then let me prove it. Day by day, however long it takes. No pressure. Just… let me try.” Maria’s breath caught. The part of her that longed for safety screamed to walk away. But her heart—the same foolish heart that betrayed her every time—leaned toward him, trembling with hope. Slowly, almost against her will, her fingers brushed his palm. Just for a second. Just enough to let him know the walls weren’t unbreakable. Daniel’s eyes softened, as though that small touch meant everything. And Maria realized with a shiver that maybe it did.
