The hallway was unusually quiet as Maria walked out of the Literature class, her books clutched to her chest. Daniel hadn’t said a word to her since the poem incident, and the silence between them was growing louder than any argument.
She turned a corner and nearly bumped into Emeka, who dramatically stumbled back like he had been hit by a truck.
“Ah! Maria! You want to kill me with beauty and force?” he said, holding his chest.
She couldn’t help but laugh. “Emeka, you’re so dramatic.”
“Drama is the spice of life,” he grinned. “Unlike someone I know who’s walking around like the ghost of heartbreak past.”
Maria rolled her eyes, but before she could reply, she heard Daniel’s voice coming from the opposite end of the hallway—low, serious, and... flirty?
Peeking slightly, she saw him talking to Anita, the pretty girl from Chemistry class, who was laughing a little too hard at something he said. Maria’s chest tightened.
“Oh, he’s got fans now,” Emeka muttered beside her, following her gaze. “Do you care?”
Maria didn’t answer. She just turned around and walked away.
Emeka called after her, “Don’t let what you feel drown in silence. That’s how stories end before they begin.”
She paused. His words struck a nerve.
Maybe he was right.
