The rehearsal had ended, but Maria’s thoughts hadn’t. All through the afternoon classes, she found herself replaying Daniel’s words in her head: “Is it?”
Was he teasing her? Or was there something more behind that look?
In Literature class, Mr. Tunde announced, “Next rehearsal is after school tomorrow. Full costume. No excuses.”
Emeka raised his hand, “Sir, will there be snacks for the emotionally drained cast?”
The class laughed, and even Mr. Tunde couldn’t help a smile. “Only if you perform like professionals.”
After school, Maria packed her books slowly, trying to avoid Daniel—yet secretly hoping he’d come over. And of course, he did.
“Hey Juliet,” Daniel said, leaning casually on her locker. “Want to practice lines later?”
Maria hesitated. “Maybe. I have homework.”
He smirked. “Scared you’ll fall for me if we rehearse alone?”
She scoffed, trying to ignore the sudden flutter in her stomach. “In your dreams.”
Emeka popped up behind them. “Rehearsal or not, I’ll be there. Someone has to supervise these lovebirds.”
Maria rolled her eyes. “You’re impossible.”
As they walked out together, Daniel brushed her hand—barely noticeable, but enough to make her heart skip.
She looked up. He was already smiling.
Why did his smile feel like both a promise and a warning?
