Chapter 6: After The Applause

253 Words
The school bell rang, ending the day’s activities, but the buzz from the debate lingered like perfume in the air. Maria packed her books slowly, her heart still racing from the fire of the debate. She had never felt so alive — or so annoyed. Daniel’s smug expression replayed in her mind like a stubborn song. “Someone’s overthinking,” Emeka teased, plopping down beside her. “Let me guess… Tall, annoying, and answers questions like he swallowed a dictionary?” Maria rolled her eyes, “Please, Daniel’s ego is bigger than this school.” Emeka chuckled, “Still... you two have chemistry. Even Mr. Tunde noticed.” As if summoned, Mr. Tunde passed by and said, “Good job, Maria. That was... intense.” Then, with a slight smirk, he added, “You and Daniel make quite the pair.” Maria stared after him, stunned. “Did he just—?” “Ship you two?” Emeka grinned. “He did. Welcome to the drama, sis.” Meanwhile, Daniel stood by the school gate, waiting for his ride. He spotted Maria walking out and couldn't resist. “You talk too much when you’re nervous,” he said casually. Maria stopped, spun around. “And you act too confident when you’re scared.” Their eyes locked — sparks again. “See you next round,” he said with a wink, stepping into the car. Maria scoffed, but her lips curved slightly. She hated how he got to her. Or maybe... she didn’t.
