Chapter 2: The space between us

Ayden's pov

"Hey" I said to him dusting my hands "are you okay?" I asked concerned

"I'm fine" He said with his head bent, for some reason he didn't want to look at me, I'm an introvert so this was a very awkward position for me so I turned to leave when the receptionist caught up with us and was checking my body for injuries and then she turned to him and scolded "Ethan you should watch where you go, you always walk with your head bent, what'd you do if he got injured" she was almost yelling

"I'm sorry" I said stepping in between them shielding Ethan my head bowed slightly "it's all my fault I was distracted cus it's my first day...." but Ethan cut me off a weird look on his face something that told me this happened often he whispered "I'm sorry I almost caused him harm" The receptionist sighed "as long as you know, Ethan you're in the same class as him take him to class and help him settle in" She said and turned to me and gave me a reassuring smile and walked off.

"Does that happen often" I asked Ethan tailing after him as we walked towards the class but he ignored me, his face straight as though nothing had happened. I stretched my hand and caught his hand stopping him.

He slowly raised his head to meet my gaze and then asked "what?????" His voice slightly pitched like I was irritating him.

I let go of his hand "you clearly weren't at fault so why was she going off on you and you didn't try to stop her?" I asked

He let go off my hand and continued towards the classroom

"We're from different worlds, people from your world are never wrong but we the poor ones are always wrong. I get the best education in exchange for taking such treatment such a great bargain " he turned to look at me with a smile that didn't cross his lips, he was being sarcastic and I could tell he didn't like me .

"I....." I started saying something

"We're here" he said cutting me off and walking into the classroom. The students paused when we walked in. Ethan hurried to the seat at the back of the classroom I watched him go, compared to me Ethan was so small, I was 18 and already so tall.

I was in a daze when someone tapped me he was same height with me and had beautiful blue eyes that stared into mine like he was trying to read me. He placed his hand on my shoulder

"Welcome to Stars High" He had a big smile on his face "Look at the ladies they're all dumbstruck, you're looking good man" He was goofy I could tell

"Hi" I said stretching my hand for a handshake "I'm Ayden" I smiled at him

" Ohhhhh no need to be so formal, I'm Steve and that's Stephanie my twin" He pointed at a pretty girl watching us from her seat

She waved at us when she noticed we were looking at her and turned away

"Heard you're the new buzz, your parents are billionaires" he looked at me with a mischievous grin

"I don't know how rich they are" I said and turned to him "I want to sit I've been standing for hours"

"Ohhh I'm sorry" he said laughing. He was so free spirited "I sit at the back with my friends. You can sit with Ethan he likes the window a real quiet kid" He said smiling

"I don't think he likes me" I said turning to look at Ethan's seat, he was staring at us and he turned immediately he noticed I had looked his way.

Screw this I thought walking up to him leaving Steve before he could reply.

I settled into the seat next to Ethan, He acted like he hadn't noticed me but I was hell bent on being his friend although starting conversations was really hard for me as an introvert I knew I had to do something

"What time does classes start " I asked him

"9:00 am" He was deliberately keeping his answers short

"You said something earlier about different worlds "

"I'm a scholarship student" for the first time since I sat there he turned to look at him and I couldn't stop thinking of how beautiful he looked. This was the best a guy could look, I couldn't stop staring.

"Hey" He waved his hand in my face "you think I'm poor and not worth being close to right?"

"No no no no no" I almost choked "how did u even come to that conclusion. Such a thing would never cross my mind I... I.... I...." I stuttered. How do I go about explaining to him that I found his fair skin gorgeous his little face beautiful and his long hair gorgeous without being misunderstood.

"U don't need to explain anything to me" he said and turned to face his phone.

I was about to say something when the teacher walked in. Students walked back to their seats.

It was an economics class and I couldn't focus, I kept sneaking glances at him, he was scribbling, taking notes and I couldn't take my eyes off him. Something's definitely wrong with me I thought.

The class was over and the teacher left the class. I was just about to rest my head on the desk when someone kicked my chair , I turned around and Steve passed me a flyer, I forgot to mention he was sitting next to me, I was in between him and Ethan which means I had to listen to Steve ramble non stop and deal with Ethan give me the cold shoulder.

I looked down at the flyer and it was for a school festival where students would perform. I looked at him questioningly and he shrugged

"Will you be attending" he asked

"Let me think about it" I replied

"Don't take too long" he said in a sing songy voice

I turned towards Ethan, for some reason I really wanted to go with him. I gave him the flyer and he raised his eyebrows at me

"Let's go together" I said in the softest tone

He rolled his eyes "Everyone has to be there you could get points deducted for missing"

"Why" I asked "Steve made it look like I had a choice"

"That's because he clearly doesn't care about the points" He was looking at me like I was dumb but I found his expressions cute

"Ohhhhh" I said relaxing on the chair

We had two more classes and I was so done

I rested on the table and drifted off to sleep.

I hadn't slept for long when someone tapped me

"It's break time, let's go to the cafeteria"He stood up leading the way " I'm only doing this cus this is your first day"

I giggled and stood up.

I could see Steve staring at us from the corner of my eyes, I turned and waved at him he was with Stephanie and some other boys but that was the least of my concern, I was starving and needed to eat

"I'm starving" I said and he gave me a faint smile

We walked into the cafeteria and sat down close to the window. Ethan had a thing for windows and I just found it cute, well I find everything about him cute. I asked him to guard the seats while I got something for us

"Do you know how to order" he asked and I rolled my eyes at him

"What do u want" I asked him

"Sandwiches will do and a milkshake"

"On it" I said walking to the counter

I came back with our food and we began eating. Ethan spilled his milkshake and went to the bathroom to clean the stain and I sat there waiting for him.

I waited for a long time and it was almost time for the next class and he wasn't back, I couldn't wait so I walked to the male restroom I could hear voices

"You should know your place, do you think you're on the same level as him just because he's nice to you, you're pretending to give him the cold shoulder just so he gets more curious about you and gets attached?Stay away from him....." That was Steve's voice and I was done listening

I pushed the door open to see Steve and his friends surrounding a scared Ethan .

Ethan's hands were tightly clasped together and he was terribly scared

"What's going on here" My voice came out slightly louder than I expected it , I was furious and was struggling to keep my anger in check.

I walked up to them a positioned myself in front of Ethan, he was now crying.

"I asked what's going on here" I was now yelling. I was like my dad when it comes to anger, I couldn't control myself

"Chill bro we were just joking " Steve was walking closer to me and I held my hand out to stop him

"Y'all are ganging up on him and you call that a joke " I asked my eyes fixed on him

"Hey Ayden " Steve tried to touch me and I pushed his hands away. The other guys started leaving

" Ayden you need to open your eyes, he's not part of our circle, you shouldn't hang out with him it'll hurt your social life" He said

"Let me tell you what'll hurt my social life walking around with someone who treats others this way, you should stay away from Ethan" He wanted to say something but I shushed him "you need to leave" he turned and walk out angrily

I turned to check on Ethan he was shaken but now he was looking at me "You should listen to him" he said

"About what " I asked wiping his tears with a tissue

"Staying away from me"

"I don't want to do that"

"You have to " he said "or I'll keep suffering, the more u stay around me, the more I'll be bullied" he was now yelling

"Hey I'll protect you from them, I can do that "

"No you can't , please just leave me alone I was fine until you came " I tried to hold him but he pushed me away

"I thought we were friends, should I just look away and do nothing when you're obviously getting bullied ? Why are u okay with all this??" I was getting frustrated

"We're not friends I'm only helping cus I was asked to help you settle in, open your eyes we can't be friends we're from different worlds different classes, you're up there in heaven and I'm in hell" and with that he walked out of the restroom slamming the door
