Secrets and Suspension

I just hope I don’t run into that handsome human again. Seriously, I can’t afford distractions right now. I've had enough complications in my life. As a siren, I’ve done plenty in the water—more than I’d care to admit—with both males and females. But let’s just say my reputation for messing up happy relationships precedes me. Stability? Yeah, not in my vocabulary. Lost in my thoughts, I continued walking across the campus, hoping to avoid any more surprises. That’s when I spotted her—Mina Rodriguez, my only human friend and housemate. Thank the tides! Mina was a beautiful Spanish girl, with dark brown eyes that sparkled with mischief, and a slim body that made her 5'6" frame tower over me. She always managed to pull off that effortlessly chic look, even in casual clothes. Mina was also a missing person investigator, which made her a perfect partner for my detective aspirations. We both had a knack for solving mysteries, but our latest interest had taken a turn into the supernatural. “Hey, Nalani!” she called out, her voice brightening my mood instantly. “Ready for our next adventure?” I grinned. “You mean the haunted lake? I can’t believe we’re actually doing this.” “Oh, come on! It’ll be fun! Besides, how often do we get to investigate something like this?” Her enthusiasm was infectious, and I couldn’t help but feel excited too. It all started when we overheard some upperclassmen talking about the lake behind the university. They claimed it was haunted, with strange noises echoing at night and lights that flickered under the surface. As a siren, I wasn’t scared. In fact, I found it thrilling. I might be one of the most dangerous creatures on earth, but that didn’t mean I couldn’t be curious about the legends surrounding me. “Just remember,” Mina said, her eyes narrowing playfully, “if we run into ghosts, I’m totally blaming you for dragging me into this.” “Please, you’re the one who was excited when you found out I was a siren!” I laughed, recalling the day she discovered my secret. It was a classic scene: I was soaking in the tub when she walked in—totally unprepared for my tail hanging over the edge. Instead of running off scared, she’d been the total opposite. “You’re real?!” she’d exclaimed, eyes wide with wonder. I had braced myself for fear, but instead, she had grinned like a kid on Christmas morning. “Okay, okay,” I said, shaking off the memory. “Let’s stick to the plan. We investigate the lake tonight.” As we walked, Mina filled me in on her latest findings about the missing persons cases around the area. Her determination was inspiring, and I admired her passion for helping others. “I’ve got a good feeling about this,” she said, a spark of excitement in her voice. “Maybe we’ll uncover something big.” “Or get ourselves into serious trouble,” I replied, trying to keep my tone light, though a part of me felt a thrill at the idea. What if the lake held secrets I’d never imagined? What if it connected to my own past in ways I couldn’t yet comprehend? But those thoughts were for later. Right now, we had a mystery to unravel. And as we prepared for our nocturnal adventure, I couldn’t shake the feeling that the handsome human I’d met earlier might somehow tie into all this chaos. I just had to make sure I didn’t let him get too close. ~ That evening, after classes and a quick dinner at the campus café, Mina and I geared up for our lake adventure. I was pulling on my jacket when Mina raised an eyebrow at me. “Nalani, are you sure this is a good idea? I mean, I love a good mystery as much as the next girl, but haunted lakes?” Her tone was half-joking, half-serious, but I knew she was in just as deep as I was. “Are you kidding? You’ve been wanting to check this place out ever since you heard about it.” I smirked as I tucked a flashlight into my pocket. “Besides, if it gets too spooky, we’ll just leave.” Mina rolled her eyes, grabbing her camera and slipping it into her bag. “Oh yeah, because running from a haunted lake in the dark sounds like a foolproof plan.” We both knew this wasn’t a normal investigation. There was something more going on here, something that stirred the water inside me—the siren in me could feel it. The lake didn’t just sound haunted. It felt like something was calling me. Sirens don’t get spooked easily, but this place? There was something unsettling about it, like an ancient power lingering just beneath the surface. We stepped outside into the cool night air, making our way toward the back of the campus. The lake was hidden from view by a thick grove of trees, and not many students ventured out there. As we walked, Mina kept talking, filling the silence with her usual chatter, but my mind was elsewhere. The deeper we got into the woods, the more I could sense it—like a ripple in the air. “You’re awfully quiet tonight,” Mina said, nudging me with her elbow. “You good?” “Yeah, I’m fine,” I said, trying to shake off the strange feeling. “Just... focused.” Mina narrowed her eyes playfully. “Focused on what? The mystery of the lake or that guy you ran into earlier?” I shot her a look. “That guy has nothing to do with this.” “Uh-huh, sure. You didn’t look rattled at all when you talked about him earlier,” she teased. “He’s cute though, right? Maybe he’s part of the mystery.” “He’s not cute, and no, he’s not part of anything,” I insisted, though even as I said it, I wasn’t entirely convinced. There was something about him that was sticking in my mind. But the last thing I needed was to get tangled up with a guy while we were investigating a potentially haunted lake. Especially with my... track record when it came to relationships. I didn’t need more chaos. We finally reached the edge of the trees, the lake coming into view under the light of the moon. The water was unnervingly still, its surface reflecting the dark sky. There were no signs of life—no frogs croaking, no crickets chirping, no birds calling. Just an eerie silence that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. “There it is,” Mina whispered, pulling out her flashlight but not turning it on. “Looks normal enough, but... I don’t know. Something feels off.” I didn’t need her to tell me. I could feel it too. My siren instincts were tingling, warning me that we weren’t alone. The lake wasn’t just haunted—it was alive with something much older, something that had been there long before humans even knew what a siren was. “Let’s get closer,” I said, stepping forward. As we approached the water, a soft breeze rippled across the surface, and for a split second, I thought I saw something move beneath the water—a shadow, a flash of something glowing. I stopped in my tracks. “Did you see that?” I asked, my voice low. Mina nodded slowly, her hand hovering over the camera in her bag. “Yeah... What the hell was that?” Before I could answer, the water stirred again, and this time I saw it clearly—a faint, glowing light deep beneath the lake’s surface, slowly rising toward us. Mina grabbed my arm, her eyes wide. “Nalani, what is that?” I didn’t have an answer. My pulse quickened as the glow grew brighter, closer. Every instinct screamed at me to back away, but something held me in place. It was like the lake was calling me. “I don’t know,” I whispered. “But we need to go. Now. Mina didn’t argue. We both turned and bolted back toward the trees, but as we did, I couldn’t shake the feeling that whatever was in that lake wasn’t finished with us yet. Something was coming, and I had the sinking feeling that this was only the beginning. As we raced through the woods, the eerie silence followed us, the glow from the lake fading behind us. But even as we put distance between us and the water, I knew we weren’t escaping anything. Not really. And worst of all, I had the strange, unsettling feeling that this mystery might have more to do with me—and my past—than I wanted to admit.
