CHAPTER:10

Lilian P.O.V. Three days had passed, since the men in black brought the envelope. We were still struggling to raise enough for Dad's treatment, but everything seemed to be falling apart. After teaching at the school that afternoon, I went straight home. I was completely exhausted. I sat on the chair and stared blankly into space. I wanted to watch a movie and forget about everything for a while, but I couldn't even bring myself to turn on the television. Suddenly, the door slammed open. Stella rushed inside with tears streaming down her face. “What's wrong?” I asked, quickly standing up and rushing to hold her hand. “Dad is gone!” she screamed. “Dad is dead!” My heart dropped. I couldn't hold back my tears either. I pulled her into my arms as we both cried. “Dad is really gone,” she kept saying. We had lost our father, and now we were left with nothing but each other and the debt. Then Stella told me something that broke me even more. The hospital refused to release Dad's body because we hadn't settled the outstanding bills. We sat quietly near the door, both crying. I wiped my tears and whispered, “At least... we're free from the hospital debt for now let them have the body.” Even as I said it, my heart was breaking. Dad was gone, and we had no money for his funeral or anything. It had been one week since Dad died, and we still hadn’t seen his body. Although our lives were falling apart, we felt a little relieved because the debt collectors had stopped coming for our properties. Their sudden silence, however, made us even more nervous. It felt as if they were waiting for something. That evening, Ella and I sat in the living room, trying to comfort one another. Neither of us had eaten much, and the house felt strangely quiet. “We need to leave tomorrow,” Ella said. “We have to get far away before those people come back.” We quickly ran to our rooms and started packed our bags with the little savings Ella had managed to keep. We planned to leave before sunrise and disappear somewhere no one could find us. I was don packing, I carry my bags to the living room as I waited for Ella, in a few minutes she came out carrying her bags and picking some valuable things, Just as we were about to leave, the door suddenly burst open. We froze. Outside, several men dressed in black surrounded the compound. A large SUV was parked in front of the house, its engine still running. Then a young man stepped out of the vehicle and slowly looked around. My heart stopped. “That’s him,” I whispered. “The boss.” To Be Continued
