Caught

The photo was everywhere by seven the next morning, Mara in candlelight at Elena's table, Callum's hand over hers, both of them caught mid laugh at something neither of them could later remember being funny. Someone at the dinner, or maybe a neighbor's window, or maybe just bad luck. It didn't matter how. It mattered that by the time Mara's assistant called her, breathless, the caption had already been shared eleven thousand times: Voss heiress secretly engaged to rival investor Callum Reyes, sources say it's been building for months. "Months," Mara repeated into the phone, staring at her ceiling like it might offer some kind of answer. "We've been engaged for four days." she then proceeded to call Callum on the phone, ''how did this happen? do you have a hand in this?'' she blurted out, ''no, I don't have a hand in this,'' he replied with kind of calm that looks and sounds suspicious, ''then why are they saying what they say?'' ,"The internet doesn't care about your timeline," Callum replied , still infuriatingly calm, like he was discussing a quarterly report rather than the unraveling of the carefully staged fiction they'd built together. "This is good, if you think about it. This is exactly what we wanted, the board sees it, the story writes itself, nobody has to work very hard to sell it." No matter how hard she tries to suppress that feeling , she knows he's right . "You don't sound surprised." she said still searching for answers in his voice, A pause, half a beat too long, the kind of pause that told her more than his words did. "I'm not." Callum answered, her heart missed a beat, she replied faster than she could think, ''was this all planned?'', she blurted out, "My PR team flagged unusual activity near my mother's street last night, I assumed it was a competitor trying to dig up dirt before the vote. I didn't think," He stopped himself, and she could hear him recalibrating, choosing his next words with more care than usual. "It doesn't matter now. What matters is how we handle the next forty eight hours." She sat up in bed, phone pressed hard against her ear, the photo still glowing on her laptop screen across the room. "You knew someone might be watching and you didn't tell me." "I told you this would be public eventually. I didn't know it would start before we'd agreed on our story," he calmly said, "That's not the same as not knowing, Callum. That's a difference in degree, not in kind." The silence on the line stretched long enough that she wondered if he'd hung up. When he finally spoke again, his voice had lost its practiced ease, gone rougher around the edges. "You're right. I should have told you last night, the second my team flagged it. I didn't, because I wanted one evening where you weren't looking at me like I was a liability waiting to happen. That was selfish. I'm not going to pretend otherwise." It was the closest thing to an apology she'd heard from him since the gala, and it caught her off guard enough that some of her anger deflated before she was ready to let it go. "What happens now?" she asked, quieter. "I'll send a statement by nine. You'll want to see it before it goes out, I'd rather you not be blindsided twice in one week, And Mara ,my mother's already called me twice this morning. She's not upset about the leak, She wants to know if you're coming to Sunday dinner again." Despite everything, a small, unwilling laugh escaped her. "Tell her I'll be there." she replied with a little feeling of something you might call happiness . "I will." Something in his tone shifted, softer than she was used to. "For what it's worth, the photo isn't a bad one. Whatever else this is, we don't look like people faking it." It should have reassured her. Instead, after they hung up, Mara sat alone in the gray early light, staring at the photo on her screen, the ring catching candlelight, Elena mid laugh in the background, and the particular way Callum was looking at her, not like a man performing for an audience he knew was watching, but like someone who'd forgotten there was an audience at all. She thought about calling him back, just to ask if he'd noticed it too. She didn't. Some things, she was starting to understand, were safer left unexamined for a little while longer. Her father called an hour later, his voice carefully neutral in the way that meant he was more rattled than he wanted her to know. "I saw the photo," he said. "And the statement. It's good work, whoever wrote it." "Callum wrote it, I assumed." A pause, weighted with things he wasn't saying. "You know I never asked you to do this, Mara. Whatever this is however far you're taking it to save the company, that was never something I wanted from you." "I know, Dad." "Do you?" His voice softened. "Because from where I'm sitting, watching my daughter's face on the front page of three different business sections this morning, it doesn't look entirely like strategy anymore." She didn't have an answer for that, not one she was ready to say out loud, not even to him. "I have to go, Dad. I'll call you later." she calmly answered with thoughts racing back and forth in her head. She hung up before he could press further, and sat with the silence of her apartment for a long time afterward, phone loose in her hand, the photo still glowing faintly on her laptop screen across the room like it was waiting for her to admit something she wasn't ready to name. [End of Episode 4 : the photo captures something that looks a lot more real than either of them intended, and Callum's evasiveness about the leak raises a new question. was it really an accident or a well thought plan.?]
