Chapter 2 Rosalba's view As I stepped out of my room, I heard distant noises downstairs. I could hear Beta Carson's husky voice, which sweets me whenever he speaks. He had earlier told me he would come over to celebrate with me on my birthday, so it didn't catch me unaware. Beta Carson and my Dad, during his days, were best friends who have a lot in common that even some park members refer to them as twin brothers. They are both built like linebackers, with broad shoulders, muscular arms, and a strong presence which can be frightful sometimes. They could easily be mistaken for one another in the dark with their similar physique. But he was not the only one, I guess a couple of people were here too as I could hear some unrecognized voices. I stepped on the stairs, approaching the dining room where they all sat down waiting for me. My peep-toe heels make some click-clack sound which soon becomes the noise in the room as everyone now goes silent and stares at the stairs. “Here comes, my princess!!” Alpha Pella announced delightfully while clapping his hands as I approached the table. Soon, everyone joins him to clap and cheer. I stood in front of them and I could recognize some park members who were present including the matron in charge of the orphanage house where I help them take care of the orphans on weekends. I and Eric would have been part of the orphans but I guess our father's hefty duty in the park earned us a space in the park royal house. “Happy Birthday, Rosalba” the matron uttered “Happy sweet 18, my Rose” Beta Carson expressed eloquently. He is fond of calling me his rose and I can't figure out what initiated that name. My dad had earlier told me a story about how I plucked the rose in his flower vase on a visit to his house when I was a young girl. But my name is Rosalba and it can easily be shortened for Rose. So could it be that he is calling my name in short or he is referring to his rose which I plucked when I was young. I really do not know. Soon, everybody in the dining room choruses and wishes me a happy birthday as they sing an old birthday song. As I stood still, overwhelmed by the love they showered, I cut eyes with a big wrapped box placed at the center of the table in between several dishes with mouth-watering meals. I really hope that was the gift Eric hinted me on. The song ended and everyone took their seats, I also sat adjacent to Alpha Pella, whose seat is at the edge of the oval-shaped wooden table. “I'm so delighted to see you guys come from your respective homes to celebrate with me today. I do not take it for granted” I commenced my vote of thanks, my voice tremble as I was tensed up. Yeah, I know I’m very bad at public speaking. “Thank you Alpha Pella and Luna Cosey for making this a memorable day for me, I can't love you guys less” I added while gazing at them. On the spur of the moment, Eric stood up to unwrap the big box on the table. My heart skips a beat as he gently loosen the ribbon to remove the wrapper. “What could be inside” I soliloquized while I laser focused on Eric's hand as he unwrapped the box. Shortly after the lid of the box was lifted, he brought out a grand multi-tiered cake, adorned with intricate frosting designs and vibrant colors. Its aroma fills the air, teasing the taste buds with promises of sweetness. Each layer is a masterpiece, meticulously crafted to perfection. My lips were widely apart that I didn’t realize when I muttered a “Wow”. Soon after that, he brought out a necklace with a lavish display of multi-colored beads, intricately woven together in a mesmerizing pattern just like the one my dad had presented to me on my 15th birthday, but this looks more expensive as it dazzled with light. It is a gift fit for royalty. “Those are your birthday gifts, Rosalba, we pray that you celebrate more of this day on earth. Amen.” Alpha Pella prayed while everyone else including me chorused “Amen”. “This is amazing, I love them” I spoke in the middle of laughter and tears, trying so hard not to cry as tears welled up in my eyes. “Beta Carson told me you love hand-made beads, so I got you the latest design” Alpha Pella expressed eloquently with a broad smile. I trust my dad to have spoken a lot about me to Beta Carson since they talk without season and boundaries. Beta Carson took the exquisite necklace and delicately fastened it around my neck, his hands moving with care and reverence. As he adjusted the clasp, he couldn't help but smile at the joy radiating from my face. I feel elated knowing that this gift would be treasured for years to come. “Where is Lucas?” Alpha Pella curiously asked in a hoarse voice, disrupting the ongoing merriment My eyes widen with fright as I gaze around the dining room to notice Lucas's absence. Everyone else looks surprised to discover Alpha Pela didn't know he wasn't here all the while. “He must have gone out after he went upstairs to wake Rosalba as you ordered him” Luna Cosey retorted. “ Gone out? To where?” Alpha Pella inquired, his voice laden with concern “I guess he is with his friends” Luna Cosey said softly with a straight look to break his mood Alpha Pella still looked worried but soon got carried away as we tossed and feast on the scrumptious meal. Only if he knows Lucas was a bone in my neck, he wouldn't have expected to see that scumbag on this table. We had all finished eating and having some mealtime chat, everyone had left for their abode and now I'm back to my room. I stood before the mirror as I admired my necklace with my fingers delicately tracing the patterns. I also observed some changes in my body. “My mate will be so lucky to have me” I grinned as I glared at my voluptuous silhouette protruding forth. “I really hope he is my type of man” I blurted, conjoining my hands like I'm saying some sort of prayer. While growing up, I have read a series of stories about being fated to someone who you do not wish, and how rejecting them can mean not having a mate forever. I never wish for any of the two. I have also read about discovering one's mate at 18, which has made me anticipate my 18th birthday all my life even though Alpha Pella told me it doesn't always happen at 18 and could take a longer time. Maybe because he found his mate, Luna Cosey, when he was 25, but I don't care. I have had some sort of strong belief to find my mate when I clock 18. A smile ran across my face as I picked up the book which I took from my school's library two days ago as I headed out to the park recreation center, my favorite spot for reading. Even though I'm not an adept reader and won't read all that comes my way, this book titled “8-teen wolf” was too fascinating for me to pass over. Flip….Flip…Flip I was so lost in the pages of the interesting story that I didn't notice the figure lurking in the shadows beneath my head. Suddenly, a hand darted out from behind and snatched the book from my grasp. Startled, I turned over to see who that could be and I was frightened on seeing Lucas and his clique gazing at me scornfully. “Give it…Give it back to me” I mumbled, my voice shakes in dread “Hey little orphan, we are just here to wish you a happy birthday” Gabon blurted with a smirk and they all giggled. Lucas gazed at the book's cover as he pronounced the title word by word. “Eight…teen…wolf, I guess the failed wolf is 18 already” He uttered as he faced the 3 rift-rafts; Gabon, Enzo and Jake, who were behind him and they all laughed again, quite harder this time. “I'm not a failed wolf, do not call me that name again!” I declared, my voice was slightly raised. “And what would you do if I called you that?” Lucas retaliated with a scornful face, he then paused to see my reaction. “You are nothing but a useless failed wolf” he added while flinging my book away. “Stop being a jerk, you ugly black cat!” I exclaimed, with my face contorted in pain and my eyes filled with tears as I struggled not to tear down. Before I could even say another word, Lucas had reached out for my neck as he grabbed it with both hands strangling me with some force borne out of hatred. I could see his eyes turn fiery red as I struggled to get his hands off my neck, but I knew it wouldn't be easy as his wolf was taking over. The pain was excruciating and I couldn't bear it any longer. I managed to raise my knees, hitting him in his balls with the little strength that lies within me. He let out a painful growl as he let go of my neck and staggered backward. His finger cuts across my neck bead and draws it to its elastic limit until it splits up. My eyes become blurred and my body was unconscious as I dropped down on the concrete floor and passed out.
