CHAPTER 7 I WOKE UP EARLY on Friday and just lay in bed a moment listening to the early morning sounds of the city waking up. It had rained overnight and the air coming in through the open windows was fresh and clean. It was going to be hot again today. I got up, showered, dressed and made some coffee and toast. I sat at the table finishing my coffee, waiting for a cab to take me to the train station, thinking of Jim’s words. Walk away from this now, while you still can. I was about to set into motion events that would end up with me committing at least two felonies. How many more was anyone’s guess. And, for what? My whole life, I’d played the odds. I had to have the advantage and there had to be an upside - something to win. What was the upside here? There was none, only a down side. J
