Dante's pov I stayed up all night not being able to sleep after watching Elena having nightmares, I decided to make her mine again. The noon sun beat down on the pavement outside the bakery, but inside my chest, a cold, calculated fury was brewing. I watched the security feed on my phone as I stepped out of the armored sedan. Some low-level local developer—a parasite named Vance who smelled of cheap cologne and desperation—was waving a stack of eviction papers in Martha’s face. He wanted to tear the building down for luxury condos. Martha was in tears, her hands trembling against her apron. Then there was Elena. My beautiful, fiercely stubborn Elena. She had stepped directly between the developer and the old woman, her jaw set, eyes flashing with a fiery defiance that made my chest tighten. She was terrified, but she wasn’t backing down. She didn't remember me, but her soul hadn't changed a bit. I pocketed my phone, adjusted my cuffs, and signaled the two enforcers flanking me. It was time to end this circus. The bell above the bakery door chimed as I pushed it open. The cheerful little ring contrasted sharply with the sudden, suffocating pressure that entered the room with us. Vance didn't even have time to mouth off before my men, towering shadows in flawless bespoke suits, stepped past me to bracket him. The developer’s arrogant smirk instantly withered. Elena’s breath hitched. She looked at me, her eyes widening as recognition from yesterday clashed with the sheer, terrifying authority I brought into her quiet world. "Is there a problem here?" I asked. My voice was a low, chilling calm that immediately sucked the air out of the room. "Who the hell are you?" Vance stammered, backing up a step until he bumped into Marco’s solid frame. "This is private property. These people are being evicted." I didn't answer him. I didn't need to waste my breath on a dead man walking. Instead, I nodded to my attorney, who stepped forward and dropped a heavy, leather-bound folder onto the flour-dusted counter. "As of twenty minutes ago, Mr. Vance, you no longer represent the owner of this building," my lawyer stated, his voice clipping the air like shears. "In fact, you no longer represent the owner of this entire block. My client purchased the deeds to every square inch of this property, in cash, over a single phone call. Your contract is null and void. Get out before we have you removed for trespassing." Vance looked at the paperwork, his face draining of all color. He looked at my men, then at me, realizing exactly what kind of monster he had stumbled into. Without another word, he grabbed his briefcase and bolted out the door, the bell jingling pathetically behind him. Martha let out a ragged sob of relief, clutching her chest. But my focus never drifted. I looked directly at Elena. She was staring at me, her hands still balled into fists, a cocktail of intense relief, confusion, and deep-seated suspicion swirling in her gaze. She could feel the invisible threads connecting us, even if her broken mind couldn't name them. "You're safe," I said softly, stepping closer until the scent of vanilla and sugar on her skin filled my lungs. "I am your new landlord." Martha began to pour out her gratitude, her voice shaking as she asked how they could ever repay me or afford the new rent. "The rental terms will remain exactly the same, Martha," I said, my eyes locked entirely on Elena, watching the way her pulse fluttered at the base of her throat. "Under one condition." Elena braced herself, her chin tilting up. "What condition?" "You," I said, letting the weight of my obsession anchor the word between us. "Every Monday morning, you will report to my penthouse office. We have a great deal of property paperwork to manage, and I expect you to handle it personally." She opened her mouth to protest, but the sheer desperation to save the bakery kept her silent. She was trapped in my web now, exactly where she belonged. The bell above the door gave a final, mocking jingle as Vance scampered out into the afternoon heat. Inside, the bakery fell dead silent, save for the hum of the old refrigerators and Martha’s ragged breathing. The old woman slumped against the wooden counter, her hands pressing hard into the flour-dusted surface as she wept in sheer, exhausting relief. "Oh, thank God," Martha whispered, wiping her face with the edge of her apron. "Thank God... I thought we were ruined." Elena didn't move. She stood frozen, her eyes anchored to mine. The fierce, protective fire that had animated her just moments ago was gone, replaced by a rigid, guarded tension. She looked at me, then at the two massive men standing like marble pillars near the door, and finally at the leather-bound folder on the counter. She was smart. She was realizing that a monster had just chased away a predator, and she was trying to calculate the cost. "Who are you?" Elena asked, her voice tight, barely above a whisper. It wasn’t a question of gratitude. It was a demand. "I told you. I’m your new landlord," I said, keeping my tone perfectly level, devoid of the overwhelming hunger that was currently clawing at my ribs. I stepped closer, observing the slight flinch in her shoulders. Up close, I could see the faint purple shadows under her eyes—the physical toll of the nightmare I had watched her wake up from just twelve hours ago on my monitors. "My name is Dante." "People don't just buy entire city blocks over a phone call to save a bakery, Dante," she said, spitting my name out like a bitter pill. She stepped back, putting the counter between us, using it as a shield. "What do you actually want?" "Elena, please," Martha intervened, her voice trembling as she grabbed Elena’s arm. "The gentleman just saved our lives. If Mr. Vance had his way, we’d be on the street by midnight." Martha turned to me, her eyes pleading. "Sir, we are incredibly grateful. But we are a small business. If the rent increases even a fraction—" "The rent will not change, Martha," I interrupted gently, though I kept my eyes fixed entirely on Elena. I watched the way her pulse throbbed against the delicate skin of her throat. "The lease stands exactly as it was written. I am a man of my word." Elena’s eyes narrowed, her suspicion hardening into something concrete. "But there’s a catch. The Monday meetings." "Property paperwork," I replied smoothly. "A portfolio of this size requires meticulous oversight. Since you are so invested in the survival of this establishment, it seems only fitting that you assist in its management." "I'm a baker, not a secretary," she shot back, her chin tilting upward in that stubborn defiance I knew all too well. "Send the papers here. I'll sign whatever needs signing." "That is not the arrangement," I said. The warmth left my voice, replaced by the cold, unyielding authority that governed my world. I let the silence stretch between us, heavy and suffocating, until even Martha held her breath. "Every Monday morning. Seven o'clock sharp. My driver will be waiting at the curb. If you are not in the car, I will consider the lease broken, and the eviction notice will be reinstated by noon." Elena’s chest heaved as she took a sharp breath, her fingers curling into tight fists against her apron. She was trapped, and she knew it. She looked at Martha—fragile, terrified Martha—and I saw the exact moment she surrendered to the leverage I held over her. "Fine," Elena said, her voice dropping an octave, thick with a dangerous mix of resentment and an underlying fear she was trying desperately to hide. "Seven o'clock." "Excellent," I said. I signaled my men, and they immediately stepped back, opening the door. I took one last look at her, memorizing the defiance in her eyes. "I will see you Monday, Elena. Don't be late." Turning on my heel, I walked out into the sunlight, the heavy door clicking shut behind me. She didn't remember the past, but it didn't matter. Piece by piece, I was rebuilding the walls around her, and by Monday morning, she would walk right back into my world.
