Shay’s POV
This bra is just uncomfortable. The black lace scratches against my skin and it pushes my boobs up. I look like I’m playing dress up in someone else's clothes. The panties are even worse. A few strings and some lace that covers nothing.
I spent my entire month's tips from the coffee shop on this thing. Maya said Jake would go crazy for them, but now I'm not sure if I’m brave enough to let him see me in this.
Maya has been my best friend since freshman year. She's rich, gorgeous, and knows everything about guys. She keeps telling me that men like Jake don't stay with girls like me.
But I trust Jake. He's the one who wanted us to wait. It's our two-year anniversary, and I’m giving my V card tonight for our anniversary.
Jake could have any girl on campus, the cheerleaders, sorority queens. He is one of the most famous, wealthy hockey players on their team. But he chose me, and that means something to me.
I stand outside the hockey house. It is a massive frat-style mansion where half the team lives. I've only been inside a few times, and it was during the day.
I use the key Jake gave me and let myself in. It's quiet except for the gaming sounds from the living room. I head toward Jake's room with the bag of energy drinks he loves.
Some moanings coming from his room. As I get closer, I hear a girl's voice.
"Isn't today your anniversary with your virgin girl?"
I stop.
"Yeah, my charity case. Can you imagine spending the day with her when I could be doing this with you…"
They both laugh, and then the laughter turns into moaning.
Charity case!
The words hit me like ice water. I can't breathe. The energy drinks in my hand crash to the floor. I walk down the hallway like I'm in a dream. Jake's door is open just enough for me to see inside.
Jake is f*****g Rachel Morrison. Rachel is the cheerleader every guy wants. Her blonde hair is spread across his pillow, her legs wrapped around him while he pounds into her.
One of the energy drink cans rolls and hits the door frame with a loud clang.
Jake's head snaps up and he sees me standing at the door. He doesn't even have the decency to stop what he's doing or try to cover up.
"What the hell are you doing here?" he yells, like I'm the one in the wrong.
Rachel turns to look at me and starts laughing while Jake is still buried inside her.
"Oh my God," she gasps between giggles. "Is this your… girlfriend?"
"Shay, you need to leave. We'll talk about this later."
Like I'm a kid who walked in on the adults, and saw what I’m not supposed to see.
Rachel pulls away from Jake and walks towards me. She doesn't even care that she’s naked.
"Sorry sweetie, men have needs that only real women can meet, not little girls who think holding hands is what excites men," she says, circling me.
Each word is a knife between my ribs.
"Do you know what Jake calls you? His charity case! He says dating a virgin makes him feel like a good person."
She notices the strap of my new bra peeking out from under my jacket.
"Aww, did you buy special underwear for tonight?” She reaches out and pulls my jacket open to get a better look at the bra.
"Don't touch me!" I shove her as hard as I can.
Rachel stumbles backward, her eyes flashing with anger. "You little b***h—"
"Shay, just go," Jake snaps. "You're embarrassing yourself."
I run out of that house as fast as my legs can carry me, tears streaming down my face, chest burning, until I collapse on the bench outside my apartment building.
Maya finds me there thirty minutes later, still sobbing.
"Shay! Goodness, what happened?"
Through my tears, I tell her everything.
"That piece of s**t," Maya snarls. "Making you feel like you weren't enough when he's just a lying asshole."
"I feel so stupid. I really thought he loved me. I was going to sleep with him tonight."
Maya grabs my shoulders. "You're not stupid. You're too good for him. And we're going to make him pay."
"Pay? What do you mean?"
"We're going to hit him where it hurts. His ego."
"Maya, I just want to go to bed."
"No," she says firmly. "We're not staying in tonight crying over that cheating bastard. There's a party at the hockey house. We're getting dressed up and you're going to have fun."
"I really don't feel like partying—"
"Trust me on this, Shay. Sitting here feeling sorry for yourself isn't going to help. You need to get back out there."
Two hours later, Maya has somehow convinced me to go back to the hockey house. The party is absolutely insane. The music is so loud I can feel the bass vibrating through my chest. People making out in dark corners like they forgot other people exist.
I take a sip of my drink. It's fruity but burns going down. "This is strong."
"You need it. And you need to hook up with someone tonight. Best way to get over someone is to get under someone else."
“You need it. Tonight, you need to hook up with someone tonight. The best way to get over someone is to get under someone else."
We're standing by the bar when I hear a group of girls laughing nearby. Their conversation catches my attention.
"I bet you fifty bucks you can't get Malcolm Haywood to even look at you," one of the girls said.
"What do you think… He's the mighty hockey alpha. He doesn’t date campus girls. He dates big girls," another one chimed in…
My eyes drift across the crowded room until I spot him. Malcolm Haywood. Holy s**t. He's leaning against the wall, holding a beer, and he's…
God, he's gorgeous. Tall and broad with dark hair and these intense eyes that look like they could burn right through you.
Then I see Jake and Rachel on the dance floor, grinding against each other like they're trying to have s*x with their clothes on. My stomach drops and this white-hot rage flares up inside me.
