TWELVE JULY 17 Adam was stressed out in ways he never thought possible. He had too much money. He was driving around with hundreds of thousands of dollars in the trunk of his car. He had emptied the bottom drawer in his office credenza, and underneath one layer of thin manila folders were piles of cash. He had cash at home, taped to the back of his dresser, in vases and boxes in the attic, and most recently, he had placed cash between the pages of certain seldom reviewed photo albums. He was making trips to four or five banks a day, to make deposits of a few thousand dollars at a time. He had no staff to help him hide and retrieve the money.
