Probin Hazarika was born in a village, Gereki Gaon of Teok sub-division, around thirty KMs from the district HQs, Jorhat of the undivided district of Sibasagar. His father was a typical cultivator who thought only two of the four sons would be sent beyond high school and three daughters should not be sent even beyond the primary school. Probin was lucky to be selected by his father to be sent to the college after his matriculation with a first division.
Despite of a first division, Probin had to join arts stream as the local college did not have a science stream at that time. He passed his degree without any honours subject, again due to non-availability of honours course in the local college.
