Chapter 9There was no creature there, just a wind machine Lady Cockerell had set up. The eyes were the lights that indicated the machine was working. Nothing to be frightened of. There was always a logical explanation. Lyne forced herself to turn aside, but though she shifted her hips, her gaze was caught by the eyes—the lights. Just lights, nothing more. She blinked, and turned away completely, grabbing the nearest lantern by its handle. It might be the same creature who’d growled at her from behind the hedgerow. Closer to, it sounded more like a rumble, low but steady, and not entirely angry. But no one else had noticed any sounds in the bushes. It was silly to have stayed late. Her mind was playing tricks on her. Of course, it was a machine. She’d turn it off, and that would be that.
