Chapter 3

A high pitched shriek sounded from close beside me. It was the blonde haired man. He crashed to the floor then stumbled to his feet and took off screaming in absolute panic. “Stay behind me!” I used my body to shield my stranger as I hooked two fingers beneath the high slit of my satin dress. I grabbed my leather thigh sheath secured to my thigh by adjustable straps and effortlessly swiped my blade out. Normally I went out armed with a gun, but the only night I decide not to, this s**t happens. The man's silver eyes gleamed in surprise as he noticed my blade. “Don't worry about it. I'm skilled. Come with me!” I shouted over the noise as I grabbed his forearm and dragged him towards the exit. More gunshots sounded from a different part of the club as people ran around hysterically. Music continued blaring, making the whole place seem like a madhouse. The man suddenly halted and jerked his hand back, pulling me back. My body collided with his and air rushed out of my lungs. We pressed against each other. Despite the chaos that was erupting all around us, there wasn't a hint of fear on his face. His expression remained as cool as it had been when he stepped into the club. As if he was unaffected by what was going on. “What—” The music and chaos pounded around us, but somehow, I could barely hear it anymore. Dominic's silver eyes locked onto mine. Something in his expression had changed. The amusement was gone. “Hold on to me.” I frowned. “Why?” He didn't answer. Instead, his hand closed around my waist and pulled me in. My body stiffened. “What the hell are you—” The words had barely left my mouth when the world lurched. Not moved. Lurched. The air around us suddenly grew cold, so violently cold that my breath caught in my throat. The music warped. The flashing lights smeared into streaks of colour. The crowd around us seemed to stretch, their faces blurring into distorted shadows as though someone had dragged a hand across a painting. “What the—” Dominic pulled me tighter against him. Then everything went black. For one terrifying second, there was nothing. No music. No voices. No floor beneath my feet. No sense of up or down. Just the crushing pressure of darkness squeezing around my body. I couldn't breathe. I couldn't think. And then— CRACK. The darkness shattered. My feet slammed against solid ground. I stumbled with a gasp, but Dominic's arm tightened around my waist, keeping me upright. I blinked rapidly. The club was gone. The deafening music. The flashing lights. Gone. We stood beneath a street light. Looking around, I recognized the area. We were outside the club, across the street. From outside you couldn't tell just how intense the chaos within the club was because you couldn't hear it. But the people running out of the doors were the only sign. For several seconds, I could only stare. My heart hammered against my ribs. “What…” My voice came out breathless. I looked back at him. Dominic stood completely still, as though he'd simply walked us through an ordinary doorway. My eyes narrowed. “What did you just do?” His gaze dropped briefly to my hand, still curled instinctively into the front of his jacket. Then he looked back into my eyes. And that infuriating little smirk returned. “Saved your life.” I stared at him. “You—” He released my waist. I immediately stepped back. “How did we get here?” He said nothing. “Answer me right now.” His silver eyes glinted beneath the moonlight. And then I saw it again. The subtle sheen of wine red… or was it crimson, in his hair. When I first spotted it in the club I thought it was just the lighting that was giving the illusion. But under the bright moonlight, crimson gleamed subtly in his jet black hair. So subtle that you'd almost not notice. But I did. And I was stunned. “You ask too many questions, Aria.” “And you give too few answers.” His smile widened. “Perhaps that's why we're getting along so well.” “You— what did you just do? How are we outside the club right now?” my hand tightened subconsciously around my blade, something I'd been trained to do whenever I sensed the slightest sign of danger. “A thank you would be more appreciated right now Aria. We're away from danger, aren't we?” The corners of his lips lifted again. God, he was devilishly handsome. Once again I sighted the same bouncers my father had sent hurrying out of the club. They moved hastily. I already knew what– or rather, who they were searching so frantically for. “s**t. They're coming for me” Dominic's eyes followed my gaze and he regarded the bouncers briefly before returning his silver eyes to me. Gentle fingers tipped my chin up and I dragged my eyes away from the bouncers and back to his face. Before I could question him further, he leaned in and pressed his lips to mine. My brain blanked out. I stood in utter shock. This man… this gorgeous man was kissing me. And hell, that was the best kiss I'd ever gotten. His lips were soft and warm against mine. For someone who carried a dangerous aura around him like a black cloud, he was being unbelievably gentle. Sensing him leaning back to break the kiss, I wrapped my arms around his neck and pressed myself into him. A low groan left him as I took over. My lips dominated his, and he let me. I poured all my emotions into the kiss, molding my body into his and threading my fingers into his long crimson touched midnight black hair. He opened up as soon as my tongue slid across his lips, seeking entrance. When I got a taste of him, a breathy moan left me and I knew. I just knew he was something else. He tasted different… exquisite. Like the most expensive wine and something else, something rich that I couldn't quite explain. I instantly wanted to get addicted to him. How? How could one kiss leave my head feeling like it was full of clouds? His strong arms squeezed my waist, rubbing in circles and pressing me even closer into him as our tongues caressed each other. Heavens. He tasted like sin. A soft gasp left my lips as we finally broke apart. I took big breaths of air, my heart pounding erratically inside my chest. The intensity of his gaze paralyzed me on the spot. I felt frozen. His silver eyes… they were doing something. They were… shining? Was I seeing things? Perhaps I'd actually been shot dead inside the club and this man was my angel sent to take me away? Or better still… my devil. “Dominic” he whispered into my ear and pressed a quick kiss there. His hot breath fanned the skin around my ear and a knot formed in my stomach. A tremor ran through me. Straight from the neck down to the heat that had formed between my legs. “What?” I whispered back. “My name, Aria. You'll remember it, won't you?” Dominic. His name sank into my subconscious. Midnight black hair that shifted to crimson under light, perfect brows, pretty lashes that framed the most mesmerizing silver eyes, a pointed nose and beautiful lips that curved into the most alluring smirk. I'd never forget. How could I—? “Miss Vale!” A loud voice from across the street shattered the trance a pair of silver eyes had dragged me into. “Thank goodness you're safe. We've been searching all over for you!” The bouncer called out to me and began calling his colleagues over. I reached out to grab Dominic and pull him away with me again… He was gone.
