CHAPTER THREE

1324 Words
The days passed slowly in sterile silence. The beeping of machines in the ICU marked time like a sorrowful metronome, steady and emotionless. Louis Monroe remained unconscious. His family did their best to visit every day. Annalise, his mother, came without fail. She would sit beside his bed, holding his hand, whispering prayers into the cold air, tears trickling down every now and then, her eyes trained on his face like it might flutter open at any moment. She spoke to him softly, about the weather, about home, about his childhood as though the memories might reach him somewhere in the fog where his consciousness lay hidden. But as the days stretched into weeks, the family began to falter. Solange returned to her Business and ballet classes. Randy became increasingly distant, his guilt weighing on him like a wet coat he couldn’t shed. Adam, could not afford to leave Monroe Holdings unsupervised for long. His mother who managed different sectors of the Monroe Holdings needed to take care of the series of companies under her. Soon, the visits were less often and grew shorter. And then, one quiet morning, Louis opened his eyes. At first, the light stung, he had to squint. His vision was blurred, his body numb in places and aching in others. But above all, what he saw was a face. A face he’d never seen before. A young woman leaned over him, dabbing at the bandage on his forehead. Her long, dark curls cascaded down her back like a waterfall of silk, glinting under the clinical lighting. Her skin was smooth, warm-toned like natural bronze, and her eyes, hazel coloured and piercing moved with careful concentration. Her lips were small and heart-shaped, their soft pink hue contrasting with the dark green of her scrubs. Louis gazed in awe but she didn’t notice at first. She was so focused on cleaning the dried blood from his temple, unaware that his consciousness had returned. “Beautiful,” he whispered, his voice hoarse and low, as though the word had escaped him rather than been spoken intentionally. He looked mesmerized. The nurse gasped, jerking upright. Her hands trembled slightly as her gaze met his for the first time. Surprise flashing in her eyes, quickly followed by professional composure.“You’re awake!” she breathed, voice filled with disbelief and barely restrained emotion. She turned and hurried to the door. “Doctor! Doctor, he’s awake!” Louis tried to sit up, but the pain shot through his lower back and legs. He winced, letting out a hiss before sinking back into the bed. Moments later, the doctor entered briskly, a black middle-aged man with a kind but focused and professional demeanor. He began to examine Louis carefully, he checked Louis reflexes, his pupil response and cognition. Beside him stood the same nurse, now holding a notepad and pen, scribbling down observations with trained precision. Louis barely looked at the doctor. His eyes were drawn again and again to the nurse, her beautiful features. She had both a strong and fragile aura that intrigued him. His gaze dropped briefly to her name tag, positioned neatly above her right breast. His lips moved. “Esmeralda Kingston,” he read aloud, a faint smile tugging at his mouth. “Beautiful name just as the person bearing it.” The doctor paused mid-checkup looking puzzled, and looked between the smiling patient and the startled nurse. “I read it on her name tag,” Louis added with a lopsided grin, his voice still weak. Esmeralda looked away, flustered and irritated. The doctor chuckled under his breath and continued. At Monroe Holdings, Adam was mid-meeting with his board of directors when his private line rang. His secretary handed him the phone, whispering, “It’s the hospital.” Adam's eyes widened slightly. Adam took the call. After a few seconds of listening, his eyes widened again, this time, sharply, and he leaned back in his chair, absorbing the words.“…He’s awake?” The joy surged through his body instantly, but he tamped it down behind years of cultivated control. He ended the call, rose from the desk, "The meeting ends here for now." He called for his wife as he left the spacious meeting room for his office. The board members began murmuring. The directors sitting closer to Adam heard him and told the rest what had happened. Annalise entered the office briskly, confused. “What is it?” she asked. Adam’s face cracked into a rare smile. “He’s awake, Annalise. Louis woke up.” "He has woken up?" Annalise asked in surprise. "Yes, Annalise," replied Adam with an affirmative smile. The sound that left her mouth was a scream of joy,it was loud, unrestrained, and soaked with relief. She threw her arms around her husband, tears springing instantly to her eyes as she danced around the office. Employees began to flock around, watching Annalise dance. Afterwards, the couple rushed to the hospital. When they arrived, Annalise didn’t wait for permission. She ran into the ICU room the moment she was allowed and fell beside her son’s bed, wrapping her arms around him as gently as she could while sobbing. “My baby… Oh, my baby…” she cried, pressing her cheek to his shoulder.“Annalise!” Adam said firmly, yet gently. “Careful, he’s still recovering do you want to get him injured?" She pulled back reluctantly, wiping her tears as Louis gave her a tired smile. “Hi, Mum.”That one phrase was enough to send her into tears again. Annalise placed a chair beside Louis's bed as she patted his head. "Louis how are you doing?" Adam asked. "I'm still engulfed in pain but I will be fine soon." Louis let out a weak smile. Shortly after, Solange, Susana, and Randy arrived together. Adam had already called them to say the good news. Solange rushed to his side, kissing his cheek softly as tears slipped down her own. One drop rolled from her cheek onto his. “I missed you, Lou,” she whispered. “It’s so good to have you back.” Her lips quivered. Louis smiled at her. "It's good to see you too,Sis." Susana, already crying before she even reached the bed, collapsed beside him, burying her face into his chest. “You scared me. I thought I’d lost you forever…” Louis chuckled faintly, his hand brushing her hair. “You’re not getting rid of me that easily.” Susana raised her head looked at him, her eyes still reddened. She smiled and hit him gently "Oh please, this isn't the time for your jokes," "Ouch." Louis exclaimed as he laughed softly. Behind them, Randy stood stiffly, his face unreadable. But when Louis looked up at him, their eyes met. And in that look, so much unspoken pain passed between them. “Bro I’m sorry,” Randy said quietly. “For the fight. For everything. I was drunk. I...I didn’t mean for any of this to happen.” Louis smiled and nodded slowly. “I know. Please come closer," Randy moved closer to his side. "But it wasn’t just you, Randy. I drove that night, drunk and angry. I made that choice. Don’t carry it all on your back.” Randy looked down, tears threatening at the corners of his eyes, but he gave a small nod, grateful for his brother’s words. The family stood united in that moment with everyone smiling and cracking jokes. Their voices and laughter could be heard through out the walls of the hospital. The Monroe family had found happiness again. Louis glanced at the window and his eyes met Esmeralda gazing at him at his family warmly. Immediately she noticed Louis looking at her, she left. And though Louis was still too weak to speak much, something about the way he glanced at the hazel-eyed nurse suggested that their story was far from over.
