**Chapter Twelve : Ash and Blood, Heart and Fire** The valley had become a graveyard. Smoke twisted in the air, and silence pressed down like a stone. Wolves crouched in hiding, some trembling, some hiding wounds, while others were nowhere to be seen at all. Aeloria stood atop the ridge, golden veins flaring faintly, her chest heaving. The wind carried the faintest echo of howls—ghosts, remnants, warnings. Caelum appeared first. Always silent, always precise, his presence chilling the air. Shadows clung to him like living armor, and his golden eyes locked on Aeloria. Kael limped forward beside her, one arm slung across his shoulder to hold himself upright. He had fought, saved wolves, and yet—every breath came with a sharp hiss of pain. “You shouldn’t be here,” Aeloria said through gritted teeth. “I am where I belong,” Kael replied, voice low but strained. “You’ll die here if you stay,” she whispered. “I’ll die if I leave you,” he countered. Her chest tightened. The words were a knife, sharp and real. The first strike came before dawn. Caelum raised a hand. The ground beneath Kael exploded, shards of stone and shadow stabbing upward. Kael didn’t move fast enough—his leg was impaled, tearing flesh and bone. He fell to the ground with a scream, the golden light in Aeloria’s veins surging in panic. “No!” she screamed, rushing to him. Caelum’s shadow detached and surged toward her. Wolves fled, but she didn’t care. She raised her hands—and the air became fire, molten and alive, ripping through shadow. But it wasn’t enough. Kael’s groan reached her ears as Caelum’s other shadow surged beneath him, crushing, binding, pulling him toward the darkness. His face contorted with pain. His breath came in jagged, bloody gasps. Aeloria fell to her knees beside him. “Kael! Look at me! Hold on! Please!” He forced his eyes open, blood running down his temple. “Don’t… let… him win,” he rasped. Tears burned her cheeks. Rage, love, and fear coiled inside her chest like a storm. She pressed her forehead to his, golden light flowing through her fingertips, wrapping him in warmth. “Not while I live,” she whispered. “I’ll burn this entire world before I let you die.” His hand twitched, reaching for hers. “I… I’m yours…” he said, voice faint, ragged. A shiver ran through her. The bond pulsed violently, stronger than it had ever been—but dangerous. She kissed his forehead softly, whispering, “And I’m yours. Always.” It was not romantic bliss. It was survival, desperation, and love forged under blood and death. Kael’s breathing slowed slightly as her golden power seeped into him, anchoring him to life—but not fully healed. Caelum’s laugh split the air. “Ah… love. Always the weakness and the strength. Let’s see which breaks first.” The battle intensified. Aeloria lifted Kael into her arms, carrying him toward the edge of the ridge as shadows pressed from every side. Her golden fire surged outward in waves, lighting up the valley like a rising sun. Wolves who had fled began to rally, inspired by her fury—but every pulse of power drew Caelum closer. He struck, and the air warped. Lightning ripped through her aura, knocking Kael from her arms. She caught him just in time—blood on her hands, his face pale, his breathing shallow. “You can’t leave me,” she growled. “You never will,” he whispered. She leaned down, pressing her lips to his, not in love but in promise. A promise of survival, of vengeance, of bond. Kael’s arms, though weak, clung to her, anchoring both of them in the storm. Golden light and shadow collided, the valley trembling under their combined presence. For the first time, Caelum faltered slightly, forced to defend rather than attack. Aeloria’s chest ached, tears flowing freely as she whispered, “Stay with me. You hear me? Stay!” Kael’s hand brushed her face, trembling. “Always… you…” And for a heartbeat, the world froze. But victory would not come without cost. Caelum’s smile returned, crueler than before. “Do not delude yourselves. The Golden Blood binds hearts—but even hearts can be broken.” Aeloria’s fingers tightened around Kael. “Try me,” she said softly. Lightning tore the ridge, and Kael screamed again—but she held him, her love and her fire intertwining in a dangerous, forbidden defiance. The bond pulsed violently. Not just magic—emotion, life, blood, memory. Every moment together became both armor and weapon. And deep inside, Aeloria knew: the longer they fought, the higher the stakes, the more they would lose before even winning a single victory. The Voidbound stirred. The mountain trembled. The Moon hid behind clouds. And above it all, two hearts beat together—shadows of life and love, burning brighter than ever… but fragile, ready to shatter.
