“He is inside that car, ma'am!” the man replied. “Ma'am?” I stared at his face, wondering why a richly dressed man would address me with so much respect. He quickly let go of my hands, then the chauffeur who brought me climbed out of another car, different from the one we arrived with, and opened the back door for me. “What is happening?” I asked the man standing beside me while looking at the open car door and the chauffeur, who had his head bowed, waiting for me to get in. But the man didn't answer me; he only pointed at the car, instructing me to get in with a word. I swallowed hard; I was certain that whatever it was tonight, I would overcome it all.
