Victor's Lucky Day

1052 Words
Victor’s POV The day was bright and promising. I sat in my office, contemplating the business deal I was about to sign. My team had prepared the proposal using a different strategy we’d acquired from a paid source, so I was confident we would secure the deal this time. My face radiated joy, but it was cut short when my assistant, Anderson, entered with a grim expression. “I’m sorry to say this, sir, but Jacob is at it again. He’s sealed the deal using a proposal identical to ours. I don’t know how he managed to do it,” Anderson, my assistant, reported. “What? How did he get the proposal?” I shot to my feet, clenching my fists, my eyes widened as I seeked for answers. “I’m sure someone in this company is feeding him with our personal information!” I yelled wishing If Jacob were standing in front of me, I might have beaten him senseless, such was the anger burning in my heart. “I don’t know, sir. We ensured the plan was known only to the five people on the team,” Anderson explained.I thought about the five team members, they were my trusted workers. They wouldn’t dare betray me. “Set a meeting immediately! I want to speak with them. I will get to the bottom of this!” I instructed Anderson. My name is Victor Dane, CEO of Dane Enterprises, a global real estate empire. I’m nearing fifty in a few weeks, and yes, I’m much older than Jacob. As Anderson turned to leave, he paused, hesitating as if he wanted to say something. But my sharp reaction made him swallow his words, and he left the room, shutting the door behind him. “Jacob! I’ll make sure I bring you down, even if it’s the last thing I do!” I yelled, my face reddening with rage. I ran my hands through my neatly combed short hair. My mind raced with thoughts of what to do about Jacob, but in my fury, nothing coherent came to me. I was too angry to think straight. I stormed into the meeting room, where, as expected, the team was waiting. Their eyes were filled with fear, well, they should be scared, because one of them had betrayed me again.“I don’t have all day. Tell me, who among you leaked our proposal to Jacob?” I demanded, scanning their faces one by one. Their eyes can never lie. “Sir, I heard he planted a spy to get the proposal directly from the investors, just like we did. I don’t think anyone here betrayed you,” Anderson replied, while the others remained silent. I struggled to believe him, but another team member spoke up. But now with a suggestion “I heard Jacob is throwing a party for his wife and to celebrate his newly acquired deal. Maybe we could gather information there.” “But we don’t have an invitation. How do you expect to get in?” I asked, dismissing the idea as impracticable. “I have an invitation, sir. Have you forgotten my girlfriend works at his company?” the team member replied. I smiled. His idea was starting to make sense.“Alright, keep a close eye on him,” I said before storming out of the meeting room. Back in my office, I wrestled with my emotions while waiting for a report from Mattias, the team member with the invitation. After five grueling hours working on a file, my back ached, and I was ready to leave. Halfway home, my phone rang. It was Mattias. I answered immediately.“Sir, he just kicked a lady out of his house! I can’t follow them out because it might raise suspicion,” Mattias said.I hung up without responding…he wasn’t expecting a reply from me anyway. Reversing my car, I instructed my chauffeur to head to Jacob’s estate. When we arrived, I saw no one. I wouldn’t dare approach his gates; we were sworn enemies. “Search the area. Find the girl!” I ordered one of my men in the car. They began scouring the surroundings. After a few minutes I heard "Sir! I found a lady lying on the bridge. I don’t know if she’s the one we’re looking for,” one of them called out. I rushed out into the cold night to see her, hoping she was the right person. I saw a lady curled up on the floor. I walked faster but froze when I saw her face, lying in a pool of blood.“Nora? Wait… did Jacob do this to his wife?” I smirked, a twisted sense of satisfaction washing over me. I should’ve felt sorrow for the dying woman, but I didn’t. “Please, help me! Save my child,” Nora, my enemy’s wife, whispered weakly, her trembling hands reaching for me before she passed out. “Get her! Take her to the car! We’re going to the hospital now!” I ordered. We rushed her to the hospital. I didn’t know why I was so determined to save the woman I despised so much. When we arrived, the doctors took her to the emergency room. After some time, they emerged with grim news: she had lost her child. “Why couldn’t you save the child?” I asked the doctor, surprising myself with my concern. “She had already lost the child before you brought her here,” the doctor replied. I nodded as she walked away. I considered leaving for home but decided to stay. I needed to know why Jacob treated his wife this way, on the other hand she could be useful to me. Later, the doctors allowed me into her room. She was still unconscious, so I sat beside her, watching her sleep peacefully. “She’s pretty…” I murmured, realizing it was the first time I’d been this close to her. It made me wonder why Jacob always got the best things in life, having this beautiful lady by his side was more than a blessing and I envied him for it. “The person he threw out is his wife. Get more information about her. She’s the perfect pawn for us,” I said, my mind already scheming.
