I stared at her, my eyes wide in shock. Tears streamed down my face, and I covered my mouth to prevent myself from sobbing.
Grabbing the doctor by her shoulders, I shook her uncontrollably.
"Please, tell me you're joking. Tell me you're fucken joking!" I cried.
"How the hell can I lose my child?" I yelled as I stood up, but the dizziness threw me back onto the bed. I felt myself losing my mind.
"Doctor, you're joking," I said, turning to Victor, who just stood there.
"Tell her! Tell her she's joking!" I pleaded, but he only kept quiet, staring at me.
"Please, someone give me my child!" I cried, clutching my chest tightly.
I swallowed hard and then glanced at the doctor again.
"If you don't give me my child, then... then I'm—"
My eyes darted to a pair of scissors on the tray on the other side of the hospital bed. I picked it up and lunged forward, grabbing the doctor by the neck.
"If you don't give me my child, then I'm going to slit your throat!" I threatened.
I was currently losing my mind.
"Help! Someone help me!" the doctor screamed under my grip.
"Nora… Nora, calm down. Think about what you're about to do and the consequences. Drop the scissors," Victor urged as he walked closer, gently and carefully.
"No!" I yelled, pointing the scissors at him. "One more step and I'll slit her throat!" I threatened again.
My eyes were red, and my hands shaky. I had completely lost everything I valued, and now my child? That wasn't possible.
The doctor kept screaming for help while Victor still tried to calm me down. Just then, a bunch of nurses barged into the room, there were about five of them.
They rushed toward the doctor, but I threatened them, still holding her beneath my grip.
"If any of you come closer, I'll kill her. Then I'll kill myself!" I shouted.
"Ma'am, try to think about what you're about to do," one of them said.
"Shut up!" I yelled.
She flinched, clearly terrified of me.
Just as my attention was on them, Victor seized the moment and snatched the scissors from my grip. Before I could react, the nurses lunged forward and caught hold of me, freeing the doctor.
One of them rushed and grabbed an injection from a drawer. She then hurried back to where I was being pinned to the bed.
The doctor on the other hand coughed as she tried to catch her breath.
"Please… bring my child back to me!" I kept yelling. I still couldn’t believe that my unborn baby had died in my womb.
As I kept struggling and thinking, the nurse injected the liquid into my shaking hand. Within minutes, I found myself growing weaker, and before I knew it, I passed out.
*************
"I can't be with a w***e. Get out of my house."
Those words kept ringing in my ear, and the next thing I knew, I was gasping, jerking upright from the hospital bed.
I touched my forehead, only to find beads of sweat.
Sitting at the edge of the bed was Victor, and his face portrayed sorrow.
"I'm glad you're awake," his voice cut through the silence.
I glared at him, not wanting to say a word. I remembered how I had reacted. My eyes then darted to the doctor who stood at the far end of the hospital room. She must be afraid to come close, I thought. After what happened, who wouldn't be?
"Are you alright?" Victor's voice came again, and I hated to admit, his voice irritated me.
"Why are you here?" I asked coldly. "Go straight to the point."
"I’m here to help, in fact..."
"Stop the drama, Victor. You and I both know that’s not the case. Why would you even care to help me? I don’t even see the reason you brought me to the hospital in the first place." I quickly interrupted him.
"You know I’m not heartless, right?"
"No, you're not heartless. You're a monster," I retorted.
"There must be some crazy agenda of yours that brought you here. Otherwise, I see no reason why you would help me, the daughter and wife of both your rivals."
"Look, Nora. I know what happened at the party. Most of my men were there. Recently, I’ve been keeping an eye on Jacob’s activities. Yes, he’s my rival and I should be watching him, but what I saw baffled me. Jacob doesn’t value you. He doesn’t care about you. He thinks you’re a disgrace, despite you being the one who supported him during turbulent times."
"But I..." He hesitated.
"I think you’re an asset. I mean, you were once the wealthy heiress of the Hiddleston Empire. Before you married Jacob, you were the brains behind the company I envied so much."
"And you're here so that I can be your pawn," I concluded.
"No, Nora. I’m here to make a deal with you. Help me. Together, you and I can build a better and vast organization where we’ll be equal partners. You can help me take down Jacob."
I glared. "Just because I’m not with Jacob anymore doesn’t mean I’ll side with you. This isn’t going to work out, Victor. I’m not going to help you."
"What if you found out your miscarriage was caused by Jacob?"
"What?" I asked, stunned.
"You heard me right. Jacob is responsible for your child’s death. After running some tests on you, the doctor came back with a report. Your child’s death was caused by stress, emotional instability, and falls. Your womb shifted, and the baby was in an awkward position, which led to lack of oxygen and, eventually, death."
My mind went back to the number of times Jacob had pushed me to the floor, when he slapped me, when he caught me with that strange man I didn’t even know, and when he dragged me by my hair and flung me to the ground like I was some puppet.
Tears streamed down my face as the memories crashed into me.
Victor reached out, placing his hand gently on my leg, which was covered by the hospital sheets.
"Jacob has caused you so much pain," he said. He then picked up a file that sat beside him and handed it to me.
I took the file and stared at the report inside. Victor wasn’t lying, he was telling the truth. Everything he mentioned was there in black and white. Jacob was responsible for my child’s death.
"Now you see the man Jacob truly is," Victor said. "So, will you just stand and watch him go scot-free after all the pain and suffering he’s put you through?
"Will you still stand by him because of a relationship he has already thrown into flames?
"Will you still side with him, or will you take things like business… just like me?"
