When Keith came out for breakfast in the morning, he had my sleep pants on but no top. I saw the bruises on his upper arm and chest. I poured him a coffee then started on the eggs. He smiled as he sipped the hot beverage. “I’m surprised you remembered I take it black.” I smiled back. “First thing you told me, the second day at work. You take yours black, and brought creamers and sugar in a bag, in case I liked mine fancy.” We ate breakfast in silence and got ready for work. I let Keith borrow a shirt, since his still had his blood on it. Otherwise, he was presentable.
