CHAPTER FOUR

ELEANOR’s POV. I was on my way back from the fields, my entire body ached and the only thing I wanted to do at that moment was jump on my bed and forget just for a moment that I didn’t belong here but even from afar, I could see the students looking and pointing. I was already becoming used to it, It didn’t matter anymore. I had just gotten to the stairs when I saw Kathy run towards me and jump on my body—my legs almost gave way. “Eleanor!!!” She screamed in excitement as I staggered to regain balance, “I have been waiting for you.” “What’s going on?” I asked, gently peeling her off my body,“why do you look so excited?” “Everyone is talking about you, Eleanor,” she beamed, her teeth baring. My frown intensified. If everyone was talking about me, then it was certainly not a good thing. “Everyone is talking about how you made Jorge bleed,” Kathy continued, her eyes wide with admiration, “no one has ever done that before. No one has even gone close to touching him in a sparring session. But you did,” she held my hand and twirled me around, “but you made him bleed, Eleanor” I should be happy I did that , but the thought of Blanko's disappointed look made me feel terrible—The thought made bile rise in my stomach. “I don’t think that’s something we should be happy about, Kathy,” I said, looking around to see some still staring and pointing,, “Jorge is just going to pick on me even more.” “At least you did something,” her voice suddenly turned frustrated, “you did what most people couldn’t do,” she paused for a brief moment and sighed, “Not like me. I am still struggling with my combat skills. I am far from what I want to be yet. But you did it. You should be proud of that.” She was trying to cheer me up, and I didn't want to make her feel worse. I nudged her shoulder and said casually, "Don't overthink it. This is just the beginning. You'll be able to do it someday. I'm starving. Now let's talk about where to eat.” “We should head out to the cafeteria,” Kathy suggested as she took my hand, “I am famished and your lunch is on me.” She added, “You have done a good job” I nodded but I didn’t say anything. I just knew this was not going to end lightly. The moment we walked in—I felt it. The shift in the air, eyes turned and the students whispered.I didn’t have to guess, I already knew what they were talking about. I hated this kind of attention. “At least you will be the star of the academy for a few days.” Kathy whispered lightly. I forced a little smile but it didn’t quite reach my eyes. We took a seat by the window, hoping to find some peace but the silence didn’t last long. Xena walked into the cafeteria. Jorge and two other boys behind her. Xena had a sneer on her face like the place stank. I didn’t linger on her for long, my eyes went towards Jorge. The scratch had healed but I could see he still looked upset. “That’s Corey and Zaki,” Kathy’s voice pulled me out of my thoughts. That was when I studied the other two boys behind her. I studied the two of them for a moment. Corey stood tall and muscular, his presence almost too difficult to ignore. His build was powerful and solid, he exuded strength. There was something intimidating about the way he carried himself. While Zaki on the other hand was the complete opposite of Corey. He was fair skinned and effortlessly handsome. His features were softer and more refined. He eluded a calm force that drew attention just as much. To me, while Corey felt like a force, Zaki was the calm. “They are both werewolf heirs and I mean high ranking ones.” Reality dawned on me. Alongside Jorge, the two of them were potential marriage candidates for me but seeing they were friends with Xena was already a big turn off for me—more chains I never asked for. “Those are the people you should stay away from, Eleanor.” she said again, “they practically rule this place and I don’t want you getting into their business” “We should leave, Kathy.” I suggested, no longer comfortable staying around them. My name was on everyone’s lips already—I didn’t want more trouble. Grabbing my food, we both made our way towards the door. Just as we walked past them, Xena brushed against me, too deliberate to be an accident. My legs wobbled and I hit the floor. The content of my flask immediately spilled over Corey’s shoes. “Oh s**t!” I muttered under my breath. I could hear laughter from around the cafeteria but that was the least embarrassing thing at the moment. Kathy immediately helped me up but Corey’s shoes were already dripping with noodles. “I am sorry,” I said politely. “I didn’t see you there.” “How dare you?” Corey hissed, taking a step closer to me. His eyes were bloodshot and he looked like he was about to snap my neck off my body, “you didn’t see where you were going?” “I just tripped,” I said quietly, “I’m sorry.” “You shouldn’t be too upset Corey,” Xena called out, her voice laced with mockery, “what do you expect from a wolfless person? Of course she can not keep up.” The cafeteria erupted in laughter again. My blood boiled. “How about you mind your business?” I snapped at her. I was glad no one knew the two of us were related because it was embarrassing to me that I came from the same loins as her. “You think you are brave?” Corey was furious, his jaw was clenched tight. I looked over the group. Jorge had an expressionless look on his face while Zaki looked like he was enjoying whatever was happening—this group was out to get me. “Since you are so fearless,” his voice echoed through the cafeteria, all eyes turned on us, “how about we play a little game, wolfless?” This name fills me with rage.I knew I didn’t have a wolf but hearing them say it over and over made me nauseous. So what if I'm wolfless? Why does everyone here have to bring it up? “Eleanor is on the chopping board today,” he announced—a ripple of excitement spread across the room. Chairs scraped and bodies moved. Chopping board? What does that even mean? I glanced at Kathy who didn’t say a word, she only had a sorry look on her face. “Today, you are the prey and every student is the hunter,” he said again and paused. His eyes swept over the hall and judging from the look on his face, he knew everyone was eager to play this game he was talking about, , “all of you can hunt Eleanor but if you get caught in the process of hunting her, you will be punished,” he finally announced as his gaze dropped to me again. My eyes traveled over them. Xena looked excited. Zaki had a smirk and Jorge, his expression was unreadable as usual but his gaze bore into me—No one was objecting, not one of them said anything. “And the game starts now!” He announced again. “Run, Eleanor,” Kathy exclaimed, panic evident in her voice. “What does that even mean?” The words were out of my mouth before I could stop myself. I looked around. Most of the students were already standing up. The looks in their eyes revealed what was going on in their minds—Excitement hovering in the air. They were already making their way forward, some of the males had even gone ahead to remove their shirts. “Eleanor,” Kathy called again, this time in a more urgent manner, “you need to run.” Right now, I was prey and they were the hunters. My heart slammed into my chest as the realization dawned on me. I didn’t think twice. I bolted.
