Kieran's mind lingered on the mysterious woman he'd encountered in the alley. As he approached The Velvet Claw he could see the warm glow of the restaurant’s lights spilling out onto the cobblestone street. The air was filled with the mouthwatering aroma of gourmet dishes, and the sound of soft jazz music drifted to his ears. With a sigh, he stepped into The Velvet Claw, reluctantly leaving behind thoughts of this mysterious woman. He assured himself fate would help him find her again.
The restaurant buzzed with chatter, but Kieran felt detached, his mind elsewhere. He scanned the room, spotting Tony at a table in the middle of the room by a window. His friend stood and gave a slight bow, a gesture of respect mixed with the camaraderie of their long friendship.
"Kieran, who was that girl? You seemed.. rather captivated,” Tony jested with a wink.
Kieran shook his head, trying to dispel the lingering thoughts of her. "I don't know.. I just met her, but there's something there - I can't explain it.”
Tony smirked, his curiosity piqued. "I saw the way you looked at her or stalked up to her rather. She’s different, isn’t she?"
"Yes," Kieran admitted with a sigh, taking a seat across from Tony. "There's something special about her. Basilius can sense it."
As they settled in, a waitress approached with a smile. "Good evening, gentlemen. My name is Poppy, and I’ll be your server this evening. Can I start you off with something to drink?"
"I’ll have a whiskey, neat," Tony said.
“An Old Fashioned for me,” Kieran requested.
Kieran glanced at the menu, then at Tony. "I’m also ready to order. I'll have the steak, rare, with a side of mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables."
“The rainbow trout special for me,” Tony said handing the menus to the waitress.
Poppy jotted down their orders, took the menus and left to fetch their drinks. Kieran glanced around the room, still half expecting to see the strikingly beautiful woman from the alley.
While the waitress was fetching their drinks, Kieran turned his attention to Tony. "Any updates on the case?"
Tony nodded, his expression serious. "I’ve been following the news. The body found at the zoo, had the same puncture wounds we’ve seen before. I think it’s connected to the disappearances in our realm."
Kieran sighed, running a hand through his hair, the weight of responsibility heavy on his shoulders. "We need to get to the bottom of this. I don’t like involving myself in the human world, but we can’t ignore this pattern. Our people are in danger," he rumbled.
"I agree," Tony said. "That’s why I suggested this place. The Velvet Claw has a reputation for attracting interesting clientele. We might pick up some useful information here.” Tony sighed, “There have been other cases in the human world with similar wounds.. from my research, it’s been happening for years, but the zookeeper was the first human to be found. All of the others were of our kind, but the humans wouldn’t know that..” Tony trailed off as their drinks arrived.
Kieran took a sip as the waitress walked away. Lost in thought, he muttered, “There is a connection here, but what is it?”
As they continued their conversation, Poppy returned with their food. The mouthwatering aroma filled the air, and the sizzling sound added a comforting ambiance to their discussion.
Suddenly, Kieran turned to the waitress, “Miss, do you mind if I ask a you few questions?”
“Sure, no problem,” Poppy replied, a little too eager, with a smile.
“By chance have you seen anything suspicious around here over the last few days? I heard there were some murders in the area..” Kieran turned his charm up all the way as he questioned her. No human woman could resist him. “..has there been any suspicious characters around or anything out of the ordinary?”
“Oh, that’s not the questioning I was expecting to get.. Um, not too much out of the ordinary around here lately - we have always gotten an odd mix of clientele, but you aren’t the first person to ask me about the murder at the zoo tonight,” Poppy replied with a falling smile. She was half hoping he was going to ask her for her number or if she was free after work. Shes been lonely at night since he boyfriend broke up with her a few months ago.
“Oh, interesting,” Tony chimed in drawing Poppy out of her smutty thoughts. “Could you tell us more about the other individual who was asking you about this? Perhaps what they look like or maybe a name?”
“It was one of my regulars, Lena, she’s great.” Poppy smiled thinking of her favorite customer. “You actually just missed her. She left right before you got here. Maybe you saw her when you were walking in - silver-white hair and charcoal gray suit..”
Kieran, surprised by the waitresses description of his mystery woman, cut Poppy off midsentence and blurred out, “Lena, you said her name was? How often does she frequent The Velvet Claw? Do you know anything else about her?”
Suddenly Poppy felt worried that she had said too much? Unsure of what to say or do next Poppy shrugged. "Not much, really. She keeps to herself, but I've seen her talking to some of the other patrons. She seems to know a lot of people, but no one seems to know much about her. It's like she has her own world that she doesn’t let anyone into."
Kieran thanked Poppy for the information, as she left them to enjoy their meal. He turned back to Tony. "That can’t be a coincidence, there's something about her that I can't ignore. I need to find out more."
Tony nodded thoughtfully. "We will, but we also need to focus on the task at hand. These murders are getting closer to home, and we need to be prepared for anything."
They ate in silence for a few moments, the gravity of their mission settling over them. Kieran's mind kept drifting back to the woman from the alley, but he knew Tony was right. They needed to focus on solving these cases.
As they finished their meal, Tony leaned back in his chair, his expression contemplative. "I've been thinking about the pattern in these murders. The puncture wounds suggest some kind of predatory attack, but it's too deliberate to be random. Whoever is doing this knows what they’re doing."
Kieran nodded, his mind racing. "And they’re targeting specific individuals. There must be a reason behind it. We need to find out who’s behind this and why."
Tony agreed, his expression resolute. "I've been looking into potential suspects. One name that keeps coming up is Marcus Steele. He's a wild werecat known for his brutal methods and has a reputation for working with dangerous human factions. He’s been off the radar for a while, but this seems like his kind of work."
Kieran frowned. "Marcus Steele... I remember him. My father exiled him from our realm for his crimes against our people. If he’s behind this, we need to stop him immediately."
Tony nodded. "There’s also talk of a new player in the underworld, someone who goes by the name Shadowclaw. No one knows who they are, but their rise to power has been swift and ruthless. They might be orchestrating these attacks."
Kieran felt a surge of determination. "We need to investigate both leads. I'll start with Marcus Steele. You focus on tracking down any information about Shadowclaw. We’ll cover more ground that way."
Tony agreed, his expression resolute. "I'll reach out to my contacts and see what I can find. We need to stop this before it gets worse."
Their conversation was interrupted by Poppy returning with the bill. Kieran glanced at it and handed her a generous tip. "Thank you, Poppy. You’ve been very helpful."
Poppy smiled. "Anytime. If you need anything else, just let me know."
As they left The Velvet Claw, Kieran couldn’t shake the feeling that the encounter in the alley was more significant than he realized. His instincts told him that the woman was connected to the case in some way. He had to find her again, but for now, his mission took precedence.
Kieran and Tony walked out into the night, the cool air a welcome contrast to the warmth of the restaurant. The city was alive with activity, but Kieran's focus remained on the task at hand. They had work to do, and the fate of both their world and the human world depended on their success.
As they made their way to the car, Kieran couldn't help but glance back at the alley where he had seen her. His wercat stirred restlessly within him, a sense of anticipation and a wild desire building in him. He didn't know what the future held, but he was determined to find out.
