Stone
“I am telling you she moved.” I argue again and the doctor sighs.
“I understand it may have seemed that way Mr. Varcolac but please keep in mind she has been in a coma for some time, the body does react to this kind of immobility.” He replaces the clipboard, and I want to smack him with it. He exits as Silver enters.
“Still doesn’t believe you huh?” He chuckles and I sigh as I throw myself into the chair next to him.
“No and I know I am not crazy, what I see is far mor than twitching.” I make a face when I say it and Silver laughs.
“I know this isn’t easy but have patience Stone, Choe has flushed her system once her wolf is no longer drowsy and reconnects I guarantee that twitching will be full blown movement, then you can rub it in the good doc’s face.”
I smile. “That would be nice wouldn’t it.” He both laugh before I sigh and glance at him.
“What?”
I think of everything that may be coming our way. “Shouldn’t you and Corrine be on your way?”
He studies me before a smirk touches his lips. “Won’t lie to you my friend I thought about it, even told Corrine we would leave but she was adamant about being here for whatever is coming good or bad and she is impossible to sway especially when she believes that in doing so, we are abandoning you when you need us the most.” I sit straighter.
“Silver, she’s pregnant with the heir to the pack, I understand.”
He nods. “I thought the same until she asked me how we could look that pup in the eyes years from now and teach them about loyalty, dedication and being a fighter when we turned away from you when you needed us and Stone I couldn’t give her answer because she was right; how can I teach my child to be all those things if we don’t lead by example.”
I swallow down the lump in my throat. “Thank you, Silver, really.”
He nods. “I did ask her that if the worst scenario happens and it gets dangerous that she remove herself from the fight, get herself to safety for our pup.”
“Yeah absolutely both of you should….”
He lifts his eyes to me. “No not both, just her Stone.”
The full meaning of what he is saying hits me square in the chest. “No.”
He frowns. “No?”
My voice is firmer. “No. You do not stay if it gets bad Silver, if anything happened to you and your pup had to be raised without its father we would never forgive ourselves, promise me once Corine is safe if it gets really wild you find your family and do everything you can to stay alive, all of you.”
He stays silent, his eyes looking me over before he nods. “Well let’s hope it doesn’t come to quite that, hey maybe nothing will happen at all and this conversation will all have been for nothing.” I roll my head to the side and look at him and he laughs. “Let me dream Stone, let me dream.”
A knock has us looking toward the door and Chloe enters with Corrine in toe, both smiling and laughing. I make a pained face. “Oh boy Silver, the witch and your pregnant wife are smiling and laughing, bad news for you man.”
Corrine sticks her tongue out at me while Chloe shakes her head, grabbing the clipboard. “Well this seems far better.” She smiles at me and I inhale deeply smiling. “Now time for her check up, out.” She tilts her head to the door and my exhale is less happy than the inhale but I respect her and Rayne’s privacy so out I go, Silver right behind me.
We step into the sun and I close my eyes letting it warm my face.
“You know that won’t help your ugly mug right?” I hear a voice and I spin around Cade walking toward me and I smile as I walk toward him, pulling him close for a hug. He tolerates me for a few seconds. “Hey man I have a mate don’t get to handsy.” I laugh as we pull apart. “Speaking of mates?” He glances past me and I nod.
“Better and better every day,” I stare at him. “Thank you for calling me, for getting me here I,” I stop unable to finish and he claps my shoulder.
“Hey man no thank you needed, sorry I couldn’t do more.” He sighs and I finally take a minute to look him over.
“What are you wearing? Are these warrior clothes?” I really study him as he nods.
“Yeah once everything went south with Rayne before the Alpha zoned out he put a bunch of groups together to, uh…” He stops rubbing the back of his neck.
“Hunt my brother.” I finish for him and he nods.
“Oaks boys too.” He adds and I nod again.
“Well guess that’s why you haven’t been around lately, not that I was out of her room all that much, all of us have been either in the hospital, with Alpha bates and his witch or,”
“Wait back up, witch?” Cade’s eyes are round and I laugh as Silver steps in.
“Yeah lots of stuff going on here believe me.” He chuckles and Cade glances at him.
“Alpha Volk?” Cade stretches his hand out.
“Nice to meet you Cade.” They both stare at me and I shrug.
“Sorry a little busy mind is kind of on overload with everything.” They both laugh and I smile
“I have no doubt, how is she?” Cade has his hands on his hips and I study him, definitely stronger, more focused.
“She is much better now that she isn’t being poisoned.” I say casually and Cade frowns.
“As in present tense?” I nod. He looks to Silver than to me. “Ok what the hell did I miss exactly; witches and poison, I was gone for a few weeks.” I laugh.
“How long do you have?” I ask and he glances at his watch.
“Enough time, tell me everything.” We head inside the packhouse and make our way to pack kitchen which is quiet mid morning as Cade grabs some coffee , Silver and I join him.
“So,” he asks as we take a seat and I glance at Silver wondering where to start.
Silver glances at me. “I’ll retell you fill in the gaps, deal?”
I nod smiling, leave it to him to understand retelling the horrors of the past weeks would be hard. “Deal.”
We spend the next hour and more talking to Cade, and by the end I am afraid his eyes will fall out of their sockets given the size of them. “That’s…..” He stares at us blankly. “And all of this in like two or three weeks’ time?” Silver and I nod. “Damn, glad I wasn’t gone for half a year, might be pups running around.” Silver chokes on his sip of coffee and Cades’ mouth drops open. “THAT TOO!” He exclaims
“Yes, Corrine is with pup.” I smile swallowing down my heartache.
Cade shakes his head lifting his coffee cup. “To the health and longevity of the Volk pack and heir.”
We all raise our cups as Silver nods. “Thank you Cade, we are both so excited for this step in our lives.
“Speaking of next steps, where is your better half?” I ask and he smiles.
“She’s on patrol, she told Alpha she couldn’t stand by and do nothing so she’s been patrolling the outskirts of the territory, she texted me earlier and she will be home for dinner.” His smile is wide.
“Surprised you two can be apart.” I say and he smiles.
“Not easy but modern technology makes it a little easier.” He says and I nod. “That and,” he stops and leans back in his chair.
“Are you blushing right now?” I tease and he goes even redder. “YOU ARE!!” I laugh as he throws his napkin in my direction.
“Ok so I’m happy that my mate is mated and marked, announce it to the world.” He grins as his words hit me and my smile slips. “You ok buddy?”
I force the smile back on my face, this was amazing news for him and I wasn’t going to let my own wants blanket his happiness right now. “Just shocked that poor girl let you do that to her,” I make a face and he flips me both birds as we laugh but I see Silver glancing at me and I dip my head slightly to let him know I was ok.
“You would be amazed at what I will let this one do to me.” A female voice rings out and we all turn to see Elise stroll in. My mouth drops at how different she looks and Cade laughs.
“Yeah amazing what a mark and some confidence will do for a person.” He winks before jumping from the chair and rushing to greet her, lifting her up and spinning her around before lowering her back down and capturing her lips with his.
Silver and I smile. “How long before this is no longer PG?” Silver asks and I snort.
“The minute Elise says hello he’d dragging her out of here.” I reply.
Elise swats Cade as she walks over to us, surprising me by sitting down. I make the introductions. Elise turns to me. “So how is she doing?”
Cade snorts. “You wouldn’t believe what’s being going on while we were out hunting.” Elise glances at him before eyeing me and I nod.
“Yes, Cade filled me in, no I am not upset; he needs to pay for what was done.” I hold the coffee cups so tight I fear it will snap.
“Well I know the other three deserve just as much attention as Jayden; they were arrogant a-holes when I was there, surely didn’t change when they found another to ally themselves with.” I smile. “But how is Rayne?”
“Short version; alive and getting better everyday thanks to our bond, the death of the traitor who was poisoning her to keep her in a coma and the witch from the Bates Pack.” Elise is wide eyed. “Oh and Silver has a pup on the way.”
Again we raise our glasses and toast as Elise sits back shocked. She looks at Cade. “All while we were on patrol?”
“Yup.” Cade replies laughing and soon we are all laughing, I am shocked that I could laugh so deeply given the situation since my return but here I was, laughing as of not a day had gone by, that my mate wasn’t attacked by my brother and that all was well.
I am about to mention this exact thing when suddenly there is a tightness in my chest and I grip it, my cup falling to the floor as it shatters. Silver is beside me as I clutch my chest. “Stone?”
I grit my teeth trying to tell him I had no idea when the pain eases, but it is followed by an intense wave of fear, a cold dread like when you wake up and don’t know where you are and just like that I know.
I shoot out of my chair ready to bolt when Silver grabs my arm. “What is going on?”
I lock eyes with him. “It’s Rayne, she’s awake.”
