Chapter 15- A promise I cannot make

Silver. I pull Corrine closer to me as we curl up in bed. “Do you think it will come to that?” She whispers. I kiss her temple. “No idea love, I hope not but you saw what he did to that nurse, think he'd happily hand Rayne off, I wouldn’t.” She is quiet for a few seconds and if we weren’t this close I may have missed her next words, barely above a whisper. “He would if that’s what she wanted.” I go still my arms around Corrine before nodding. “Yes he would and it would kill him but he would absolutely do that for her, damn.” I mutter as Corrine curls herself into me. “Guess it’s a good thing the Bates witch was able to detect the poison and Rayne won’t be getting anymore of those injections.” I nod before a sharp pinch on my thigh has me jerk to the side. “OW!” She huffs. “Serves you right for not telling me she was a witch. Be lucky it was a pinch. If I wasn't carrying the future Alpha of the Volk pack I would tell you to settle this on the field.” Even though I know she is serious, I cannot help the grin that splits my face. “Future Alpha, nice ring to it.” I lay my hand on her belly and make lazy circles with my thumb. “Boy or girl?” She snorts. “Don’t care, healthy is the target.” She glances upward at me. “You have any preferences?” I search her face and lean over to kiss her softly. “No, but I hope she has your eyes.” An eyebrow lifts. “She?” I chuckle. “Sweetheart if we have a son with your eyes we will be grandparents before either of us wants.” She laughs and curls into me a bit more and we simply enjoy the silence and the warmth of each other and soon I hear Corrine’s breathes slow and even out as she falls asleep. I close my own eyes and lean my head back as slumber slowly claims me. I blink and look at the clock happy to see a few hours have passed, Corrine is softly snoring in my arms and I decide to enjoy this peaceful moment, goddess knew there may not be many of these kinds of nights left. I sigh as I wonder if the Royals would actually come for Rayne then I laugh at my own thought, of course they would, I heard the last remaining full blood prince was a royal pain, no pun intended and he was a wolf that loved to fight. My mind wanders and I hope to the goddess that Rayne is out of that damnable coma if they do show up and a secret selfish part of me hopes that because if she isn’t Corrine won't leave and if war shows up at the Brooke’s pack I want my pregnant mate far, far away from here. “If you scowl anymore it will be permanent.” Corrine mumbles and I chuckle kissing the crown of her head. “Do I want to know? “Probably not.” I sigh and this has her attention as she pulls back a little and raises an eyebrow at me. I know straight away I have lost an argument we haven’t even had yet. “If the Royals come for Rayne,” She cuts me off before I can finish. “We will be ready.” “Corrine,” I sigh and she pulls back a little further. “No, not even an option.” She states flatly and I pin her with a stare, my wolf growling at its mate stubbornness. “You have to see this from my perspective, you are pregnant with our pup, seems like a bad idea to be here if what Bates thinks is coming actually does come.” Now she is out of my arms and standing, hands on hips. “Silver Volk do not tell me after all this time I have to discover I mated a coward.” She hisses and now I am up as well. “Excuse me?! Caring about you and our pup is cowardly?” I throw back at her and even though I love how Corrine never backs down right now it is a flaw not a quality. “No that is commendable but abandoning the people who need us the most right now for our own safety is cowardly Silver,” I open my mouth to speak but she shakes her head. “No, how can we do that to our friends and expect them to come to our aid if we should ever need them, how can we look them in the eye and tell them their pack is less important than ours,” she puts a hand on her belly before looking back at me, eyes glistening. “How can I look this pup in the eye years from now and teach them to be a fighter, to be strong and loyal when we turned heel and were anything but that?” I fight internally with my wolf, his sole purpose to protect the pup in her belly, my human brain arguing with him that Corrine was right and finally we come to a compromise. “Fine but if it gets really bad, I mean dangerous to a point of life and death, promise me you will try to remove yourself and protect the future of this pack, especially if their father is going to stay and see it all through.” She smiles and cups my cheek. “I promise and let's just pray to the goddess that it doesn’t come to that.” I lean in and wrap my arms around. “Let's hope.” I whisper, but deep down I truly believe the Brooke’s pack will be facing the largest storm in its history of existence and my prayer is that when, not if, it comes, we have the power to weather the storm and come out the other side to see the sun shine once more.
