Stone.
Melody gasps in shock. “But he’s your brother.”
“No, he stopped being my brother the day he started plotting against her.” I glance toward Rayne as a silence settles over the room. Melody sniffs and extracts herself from my arm, taking a seat next to her husband. I sit back down knowing my parents are torn by my declaration and I am about to address it when the doctor enters and sees an addition to the room.
“Ah Mr. Varcolac, good to see you.” I nod to the doctor as he takes the clipboard from the foot of the bed, glancing at machines, jotting down a few things before replacing the papers back to their original spot, walking over to the side board to grab a needle and a vial, a low growl escapes me as he punctures Rayne’s arm. “Necessary I’m afraid.”
“Apologies I know it’s just,”
He smiles. “I understand, no explanations nor apologies needed.”
He gathers his things and leaves. “That’s it?” I ask and my mom nods.
“Basically.”
“Does he never give an update on her condition?” I ask and my mother simply looks at me. “Oh, right.” Why would he when they all expect her to die.
I stay in my chair by her bed for the rest of the afternoon, my mother brings me drinks and my meals, which I eat one handed and she smiles but says nothing. Another bed is brought in and they install it against the wall and I lift an eyebrow at the orderly. “Sir?”
“Next to the bed please; neither one of us has arms that long.” I reply flatly gaining a smile from both my parents, even Melody smiles. The two men do as I asked, and I thank them as they leave, the sun setting has the room basking in a soft orange glow, I am surprised the sun is so bright for a January day, usually the winter didn’t allow for sunsets this clear.
“Looks like it is going to be a nice day tomorrow, sunset is a beautiful hue of orange and pink.” My mother states and I nod.
“Seems like it.” I reply as a hear a commotion in the hallway and I stand ready to fight whoever is about to enter but when Corrine comes barreling in the room I relax and sit back down, steeling myself for what is about to happen.
She rushes to Rayne’s free side and takes her other hand. “Oh Rayne.” She whispers. “What the hell did they do to you?” She closes her eyes as tears slip out. “I promise I’m going to get them back.”
“Get in line.” I mumble and she opens her eyes to glance at me.
“If you find them before I do you better call me.” Her voice is low and menacing and I fight the urge to shiver. She glances at my parents. “Apologies but I cannot be delicate about my intentions.” Both my father and mother nod but say nothing and I could understand; Jayden was their son even if he did paint a target on his back. “Stone?”
“Yeah?”
“I want a few moments alone with Rayne.” She says and I go to shake my head. “I wasn’t asking Beta.”
I stand and glare at her. “You may want to remember to whom you speak; you may be Alpha mate in Silver’s pack but in this one you hold the same rank as I do only difference is yours is active mine is to happen and I will not stand here and have you pull rank on me no matter how upset you are Corrine.” My voice comes out strong and authoritative.
After a few seconds she nods. “Sorry Stone I just need to speak to my friend, alone.” She glances at me and I read the message loud and clear; I want to say what I have to say to her in case she slips away.
For the first time since I arrived in her room I let go of Rayne’s hand, mine feeling empty and cold but I force myself out of the room, along with everyone else, Alpha Brookes was brought back to the packhouse an hour ago. We exit the room and I spot Silver, walking over to him.
“How is she?” he inquires, and I sigh, hands on hips.
“Dying.” I finally say the word, well say was polite I spit the word out like it was poison.
“Do they not seem optimistic?” He asks and shrug.
“Doc came in, checked vitals and drew blood but said nothing, not sure that’s bad or good.”
“No news is good news.” He mumbles and I sigh, my shoulders slumping when Silver’s cell rings and I see Alpha Bate’s name pop up on the screen. “Excuse for a moment.” He puts the phone to his ear and walks out of the clinic leaving me wondering what my dear friend was up to.
“Stone?” I glance at my mother. “I realize you meant what you said but is there anyway we could talk to Jayden before…” She does not finish and I nod.
“If I can bring him back sure but if he attacks and I have no choice.” I reply and she wipes the tears away.
“I understand.” She whispers and my father hugs her to his frame.
“We both do; he is a traitor.” My father replies with a mix of hurt and anger.
I am about to answer when a blood-curdling scream echoes from inside Rayne's room, and I am out of the chair and rushing into her room glancing at her body as sirens blare and machines go crazy, Corrine crying hysterically. “I was just talking to her, telling her she could fight this, that she was strong, and the machines went crazy.” She says to me as doctors rush in with nurses, the room in complete and utter chaos as I hear a doctor call out for the charging pads.
“CLEAR!” Someone shouts, followed by the most awful humming and zapping sound, like you hear when moths fly into an electric lantern, and it all becomes clear, too clear.
Rayne was flat lining, she was dead.
