Silver.
I take the call from Bates outside. “Hi James, thank you for calling me on such short notice, I know you are busy.”
“No worries, seemed urgent enough; what’s going on in the Brooke’s pack?”
I sigh. “Where to start with that mess.” I explain everything and once done he is silent. “Bates?”
“I’m here just not happy.” He growls and I understood, none of us were happy. “What do you need from me?”
“I was wondering if you could look into Oaks, past and present, his son too maybe we can dig up some dirt, have them stripped of their titles and the pack either absorbed or disbanded into rogues for those who refuse; these two don’t deserve the title of Alpha.”
“On it, and the Varcolac boy?” I smile at how he refers to Jayden.
“Well, he has been stripped of his status by Rayne,” I reply
“Rayne? You mean Robert?”
I smile. “No and believe me if she survives this, I will explain everything but trust me there is something with Rayne as well, something bigger than we understand.” I chew on my lip thoughts running full speed. “Actually, could you also look into her family tree, go back as far as you can, I know you have some of the best researchers in the packs, wouldn’t ask as much as I am if you didn’t.”
“Its fine Silver. What’s been done is an abuse of power, this has to be made right.” I nod. “I will see what I can find before I make my way over to the Brooke’s pack.”
I raise an eyebrow. “You are coming here? Why?”
“I have my reasons, but I also have a someone special on my team, dabbles in medicinal healings and such, might benefit Brooke’s daughter, what with the silver poisoning.” I am about to convey my thanks when I hear Corrine scream and a wave a panic rushes through me,
“Might want to be quick about it Bates, I think Rayne is in far more danger than first believed. I have to go, but I will keep in touch.” I don’t wait for a reply as I rush back into the clinic and into Rayne’s room, chaos was a gentle way of putting the c*****e I was seeing, and I seek out Corrine who is huddled in the corner, hands over her face and I rush to her, pulling her to me as I scoop her up.
“I don’t want to leave until I know for sure.” She half mumbles, half cries.
“OK love, just hang on to me.” I whisper as I move out of the vicinity of the bed where the doctors are working on Rayne and trying to hold Stone back. One look at my friend's face and my heart breaks for him as I squeeze Corrine tighter to me, praying to the Moon Goddess that I never have to feel the way Stone is feeling right now. I cross the room and sit in the corner, my eyes on the scene so Corrine doesn’t have to look, and I swallow down my sorrow for Stone, fearing I will pass it on to Corrine and she will misinterpret it.
“Let me go, I have to go to her!” Stone roars.
“Mr. Varcolac, restrain yourself, we are trying to save her life.” The doctor roars back.
“AND YOU ARE FAILING!” His reply shakes the walls, surprising everyone enough they loosen their grip unintentionally and Stone slips out of it, rushing to Rayne and taking her hand in his. “Dew drop I know you can hear me; you promised me forever, and you do not get to back out of this promise Rayne, I am here waiting baby girl, DO NOT GIVE UP!” He growls and leans over kissing her fiercely when suddenly the machines begin to beep, slow at first and faint but enough that the doctor steps back wide-eyed.
“That’s not possible.” He mumbles. “How…” All eyes turn to Stone, who keeps his eyes on Rayne.
“She is my mate,” He replies, smiling.
“Granted but still that should not have been possible.” The doctor looks around as if someone can provide an answer but all he gets are blank faces, hell even I was shocked, Corrine sitting straight up in my lap, tears forgotten, easing off me slowly and I let her get closer to her friend.
Corrine’s eyes dart between Stone and Rayne. “Let go of her hand please.” Corrine says and Stone shakes his head vehemently. “Just for a few seconds Stone, please.” I get up slowly watching my mate, my eyes trained on Rayne and Stone, as do Stone’s parents and Rayne’s mother, all eyes on them even those of the doctors and nurses. Stone lifts his eyes to mine and I nod slowly and he does. It takes a few seconds but it happens; her stats begin to drop, oxygen, heartbeat , all of it begins to decline and Stone grabs her hand before she crashes, the numbers increasing and we all stare at him in wonder. “Stone?” Corrine calls his name and he lifts his eyes her way. “Your bond with her isn’t a simple bond is it?”
He smiles. “No,” He glances at everyone in the room. “Our bond is far deeper and stronger, the Sorodna Dusa I believe Rayne called it.”
Stone’s mother gasps from behind me and I look at her. “Apologies but can someone explain this to me?” I ask
Rayne’s mother smiles as tears fall. “They share a bond and love deep rooted, long before they even knew they were mates,” she looks at me. “He will be the one to save her life, not them.” She points to the doctors and my mouth drops.
“How?”
The doctor nods. “Because they are so intwined with one another; he will feed her body the strength it needs to fight the poison,”
I smile no wonder Stone couldn’t let her go and move on. “Then by the Moon Goddess’s will shall it be.” I reply smiling as I pull Corrine to me, genuine smiles finally emerging on all our faces as Stone gazes lovingly at Rayne.
“I’m here dew drop and I am not leaving no matter what.” Stone whispers kissing her and suddenly there is hope.
