Silver.
I glance at James. “So what exactly are you saying because I haven’t been getting much sleep and I want to make sure I am not misunderstanding you.” He scowls.
“You heard right.” He replies and I pinch the bridge of my nose.
“Are you telling me you can’t find an ounce of dirt on either of those two?” he nods. “How is that possible; the man treats women like they only serve to breed, how can the man be squeaky clean?”
“I still have people sniffing around but I have had to warn them against getting too close.” I nod
“Yeah Goddess knows what Oak would do if he figured any of this out.” James nods.
“How is Rayne doing?”
I lean back. “Good, better every day although doctors worry she may have some organ problems because of the poison, nothing life threatening but definitely life altering; diet and fertility issues mainly.” I swallow down the sadness; when the doctors had explained it to everyone my eyes stayed on Stone; although he seemed relieved just to know she would live I could tell the fertility part had hit him hard even with the brave front he put on.
James rubs his chin, his beard making a scratchy noise. “Let Chloe take a look at her.”
I lift an eyebrow. “The woman that came with you?”
James nods. “She is younger than you would expect but she learned from her mother who learned from her mother who,” he stops and smiles. “You get the idea.”
I laugh. “I do, really think it would help?”
He shrugs. “No idea but it surely won’t help if she does nothing.”
“Touché.” We laugh.
“You will have to convince her mate though.”
I already can hear Stone contesting. “I may have to pull rank.” James shakes his head.
“Appeal to his parental side first.”
I wince. “That’s a hit below the belt.”
He stands sighing. “True but it’s the best shot we have at letting James even getting close to Rayne.”
I stand, nodding in agreement. “True enough.” I take his outstretched hand. “Thank you for all your help.”
“My pleasure, kind of fond of Rayne.”
I lift an eyebrow. “Please tell me Stone won’t be fighting you for her?”
He barks out a laugh, a deep bellow of a thing. “No, not my style to take another’s mate but she is tough, stands her ground and fights for what is right; the way she handled Oaks and his female members was crafty beyond words; anything I can do to keep her on this earth breathing is an honor.”
We walk out of the pack house and into the mid day sun, the snow crunching beneath our feet. “Well I for one am glad she has you on her side.”
“She has many on her side Silver, more than she knows.” He comments and when I glance his way his expression tells me he isn’t sharing something but he simply smiles. “Well I am this way, talk to you soon friend.”
I shake his hand once more. “Talk to you soon.”
We part ways as I head to the clinic and he heads to his cabin, my mind wondering what it was he wouldn’t say as I step into the familiar atmosphere and the nurses wave hello to me.
“Alpha, good to see you again.”
I smile. “Thank you, how is she doing today?”
A larger smile. “Better and better.”
“Glad to hear it.” I stroll past them and head toward her room, knocking softly before stepping in and the scene before me is one of horror; Stone is lying motionless on the ground as a young blonde girl stand over Rayne with a syringe in hand, poised above her neck.
I charge without asking questions, tackling the young girl from behind, nearly getting stabbed myself as I wrestle her to the ground.
“GET OFF OF ME!” she screams as I pin her to the floor.
“Not until you explain yourself, NOW.” I growl out my command and I feel her relax under the weight of it.
“I am trying to help them both.”
“Really? Because it looks like my friend is unconscious and you were trying to inject his mate.”
She looks at me. “That’s exactly what I said; trying to help them both.”
I growl again. “You better start making sense or I’m giving my wolf control and you can try to explain without a throat.”
She sighs rolling her eyes. “if you could let me up before they both die.”
This has me losing my grip enough that she escapes me and hurries to grab the syringe once more, injecting Rayne before I can protest. She looks at me and shakes her head in an irritated fashion before picking up another syringe and squatting down to inject Stone. She stands and looks at me. “Would you mind, he’s a little heavy for me to lift.”
I frown but pick Stone off the ground and place him on the bed next to Rayne’s, laying his hand on hers to keep contact. “Alright explain and make it quick.”
“I’m Chloe Sharpe, Alpha Bates asked me to accompany him.”
I look her over now realizing I had seen her before. “Ok that I can appreciate but what was with the needles?”
She sighs. “Although she is getting better he,” she points finger at Stone. “is not.”
My heart beats faster. “What do you mean?”
“I was told they share a special bond, the Sorodna Dusa?” I nod. “Well as great as that is for her it isn’t for him, not in this situation.”
I pinch the bridge of my nose. “English please.”
She nods. “He is giving her strength to fight the poison.”
“Yes, I know that already.”
“Well she’s not exactly in a position to reciprocate.” I stare at her blankly and she sighs frustrated, “Alpha’s” she mumbles and I am about to show her what I think of that comment but she plows on. “She is sucking the life out of him, literally.”
I glance at Stone’s unconscious body and understand finally. “So he’s dying?”
She shakes her head. “Not quite but if he keeps it up it might just do that.”
“So what did you give them?”
“Her I gave a mixture of herbs and antidotes to boost her body against the poison so he can have a break.”
“And him?”
“He simply got a healthy dose of vitamins and such to fill in the stuff she has been taking.”
I exhale a breath I had no idea I was holding in. “So they will both be ok?”
She studies Rayne for a few minutes. “I believe so but,”
“What?”
She sighs going to the foot of Rayne’s bed, removing Stone’s hand from Rayne’s and I fight a smirk as she reads over Rayne’s chart. “Something is off with this.”
I stand closer to her. “You will forgive me if I seem skeptical of your medical training.”
She glances at me and rolls her eyes again, an action I find severely irritating. “And you will forgive me if I am unfazed by your lack in my abilities; I have learned from a very long line of women who not only dabbled in medicinal herbs but also understood medical practices along with a few other shall we say less than orthodox methods.” She goes back to the chart and I study her closely before understanding.
“Ah a long line of women who also happen to be witches.”
She smiles without looking at me. “Not so slow after all Alpha.”
I bristle at that. “How old are you exactly?”
“Tsk, never ask a woman her age Alpha.” She states with a wide smile before glancing my way. “Let’s just say I could easily be your grandmother.” She looks me over. “Maybe even your great-grandmother.” She chuckles at my face before going back to the chart. “And this is all wrong.”
“What is?”
“Her blood work; if she was poisoned this count would be higher not lower and this would defiantly not be as high,” she glances between Stone and Rayne before looking at me. “Did anyone know they shared that bond before he showed up?”
“Not that I know of, everyone seemed pretty shocked when he grabbed her hand and her vitals started going back up.” I explain and she tosses the clipboard behind her muttering. “What is the issue?”
She turns to me, anger written all over her face. “The issue Alpha is whatever she was given wasn’t silver, it was made to look that way.”
“But why?”
She glances at Stone then back to Rayne. “They needed to make it look like her life was in danger so he would come back.”
“Again why?”
She pins me with a stare that reaches into my soul. “Because whoever set this up knew about their bond and knew he would give everything he had to keep her alive.” I start to understand and the color drains from my face. Chloe nods. “Exactly; they either want or need him dead.”
“But what purpose would that serve, Rayne is the Alpha’s daughter.”
She nods. “True but when mates share a Sorodna Dusa bond and one dies, even if they are not mated, the other will go mad, some say feral even, it would be the proverbial two for one; he would be dead and she would mentally gone as well leaving the Brooke’s pack without lineage.”
“But then that means,” My eyes snap to hers.
“That means the people that can be trusted has just reduced greatly; I believe there is a traitor among us Alpha and the target is these two.”
