21 They walked silently back toward the diner. Trudy’s lips were thin, her eyes filled with hate and her face red. Bruce glanced at her out of the corner of one eye as he walked beside her. The little bell over the door on Mom’s Diner rang brightly as they entered. Alice looked up as they approached the booth, Trudy in the lead. She was smiling until she saw Trudy’s grim expression, then the smile quickly faded. She cast her eyes down to the page of the black book Peggy and she had been reading. Trudy sat down across from the two women and gazed out the front window, her eyes hard, her arms crossed. “We lost her,” said Bruce, matter-of-factly. He joined Trudy, across from Alice and Peggy.
