Episode Ten - Choosing a new beginning

531 Words
Yumi stared at the message on her phone. “I know I have no right to ask this, but can we start over?” She read it several times. Months ago, she would have immediately replied. Months ago, she would have spent the entire night wondering if love deserved another chance. But she wasn’t the same person anymore. She placed her phone on the table and walked into her children’s bedroom. Nathalie was sleeping peacefully while Akiro James was hugging his favorite toy. Yumi sat beside them and smiled. These two little souls had become her reason to keep moving forward. The next morning, she prepared breakfast while her children sat at the table talking and laughing. “Mama, can we go somewhere today?” Nathalie asked. “Where do you want to go?” “The beach!” Akiro immediately raised his hand. “Ice cream!” Yumi laughed. “How about both?” The children cheered excitedly. For the rest of the day, Yumi forgot about the message. She forgot about the heartbreak. She forgot about the pain. She simply became a mother enjoying precious moments with her children. As the sun began to set, they sat together on the beach. Nathalie was building a sandcastle while Akiro chased the waves. Yumi closed her eyes and listened to the sound of the ocean. For years, she had been afraid of being alone. But now, she realized she wasn’t alone at all. She had her children. She had a career. She had dreams. Most importantly, she had herself. “Mama!” She opened her eyes. Nathalie was holding a small seashell. “I found this for you.” Yumi accepted the shell and smiled. “It’s beautiful.” “No,” Nathalie said. “You’re beautiful.” Yumi felt tears forming in her eyes. How could someone so small carry such a big heart? That evening, after putting the children to bed, she finally picked up her phone. The message was still there. “Can we start over?” She took a deep breath and began typing. “Thank you for reaching out. I don’t hate you, and I wish you nothing but happiness. But some chapters are meant to remain in the past. Right now, my priority is myself and my children.” She pressed the send button. And just like that, years of waiting finally came to an end. Later that night, she opened her journal. Instead of writing about broken promises, she wrote down three new goals: * Build a better future for Nathalie. * Give Akiro James a happy childhood. * Learn to love herself completely. She closed the notebook and looked at the family photograph on her bedside table. For the first time, she didn’t see a broken family. She saw a family built on love, strength, and resilience. Before turning off the light, she whispered a promise to herself. “I will never lose myself again.” Outside, the stars illuminated the night sky. Inside, a mother’s heart finally found peace. But life still had one more surprise waiting for Yumi. Because sometimes, the end of one love story becomes the beginning of another.
