Episode Eleven - The Woman in the mirror

589 Words
A few weeks had passed since Yumi finally decided to close the door on her past. Life was still far from perfect. There were bills to pay, deadlines to meet, and two children who depended on her every single day. But something had changed. For the first time in years, she no longer woke up with a heavy heart. One Saturday morning, Yumi stood in front of her bedroom mirror while getting ready for work. She stopped for a moment and stared at her reflection. The woman looking back at her was different. The sadness in her eyes had slowly been replaced with determination. The woman who once begged for answers had finally stopped questioning her worth. “Mama!” Nathalie’s voice interrupted her thoughts. “We made you breakfast!” Yumi walked into the kitchen and found Nathalie proudly standing beside Akiro James. A slightly burned piece of toast sat on a plate beside an unevenly spread layer of jam. “We made it ourselves!” Nathalie said excitedly. Yumi laughed. “It’s perfect.” “No, it’s not,” Nathalie replied. “It’s a little burned.” Yumi smiled and hugged both of her children. “Sometimes, imperfect things become the most beautiful memories.” That afternoon, Yumi visited a bookstore while her children attended a weekend activity nearby. As she walked through the aisles, a book caught her attention. The title read: “You cannot become who you are meant to be if you continue living in who you used to be.” She stood there for several seconds. The words felt personal. For years, she had defined herself by her failed relationships. She was the woman who had been betrayed. The woman who had been left behind. The woman who had been disappointed twice. But she was beginning to understand that her life was much bigger than her pain. That evening, Andrea called her. “How are you doing?” Andrea asked. Yumi smiled. “I’m happy.” There was silence on the other end of the line. Then Andrea laughed. “You know, that’s the first time I’ve heard you say that and actually believe it.” Maybe she was right. Because happiness didn’t always come from finding the right person. Sometimes, it came from finally finding yourself. Later that night, Yumi opened her journal. Instead of writing goals, she wrote a letter to the younger version of herself. “Dear Yumi,” “Thank you for surviving the days you thought you couldn’t.” “Thank you for staying strong when everything around you was falling apart.” “And thank you for never giving up on love, even after your heart was broken.” Tears slowly rolled down her cheeks. But these weren’t tears of sadness. They were tears of gratitude. Before going to bed, she walked into her children’s bedroom. Nathalie was asleep with a book resting on her chest. Akiro James was hugging his blanket. Yumi kissed them both on the forehead. Then she looked at the family picture hanging on the wall. For years, she believed that family meant having two parents under one roof. Now, she understood that family meant showing up, loving each other, and choosing one another every day. As she turned off the bedroom light, she caught her reflection in the mirror one last time. And for the first time in a very long time, she smiled at the woman staring back at her. Because she finally recognized her. And she was proud of her.
