Episode Twelve - The nights that made her strong

688 Words
The house was unusually quiet. Nathalie was already asleep in her bedroom, while Akiro James lay beside Yumi, his tiny hand wrapped around her finger. She gently brushed his hair away from his forehead. Three years. It had already been three years. She smiled as she watched him sleep, but her smile slowly faded as memories began to flood her mind. Memories she had tried so hard to bury. Memories of a time when she thought she wouldn’t survive. She remembered the day she discovered she was pregnant with Akiro James. Instead of feeling excitement, she felt fear. Her relationship was already falling apart. The future she had imagined was slowly disappearing. And deep inside, she knew she would have to face the journey alone. The pregnancy wasn’t easy. There were days when she felt physically exhausted. There were mornings when she cried before going to work. There were nights when she lay awake, wondering how she would raise another child by herself. Who would help her? Who would stay beside her? Who would hold her hand when she was afraid? But life didn’t wait for answers. Month after month, her pregnancy continued. She continued working. She continued taking care of Nathalie. She continued pretending that everything was fine. Until the day her labor began. She still remembered every detail. The pain. The fear. The uncertainty. The cold hospital room. She remembered looking around and realizing that she was alone. No one was there to hold her hand. No one was there to tell her that everything would be okay. No partner. No comforting embrace. Just her. And yet, she stayed strong. Hour after hour, she endured the pain. Every contraction reminded her that she had no choice but to keep going. Because another little life was depending on her. When she finally heard her son’s first cry, tears immediately filled her eyes. At that moment, nothing else mattered. The heartbreak disappeared. The loneliness disappeared. The disappointment disappeared. All she could see was the tiny baby lying in her arms. “Hello, my little boy,” she whispered. For the first time in months, she smiled. But bringing Akiro James home wasn’t the end of her struggles. It was only the beginning. There were sleepless nights. There were nights when she carried him in her arms while trying to stop him from crying. There were nights when she was so exhausted that she fell asleep while sitting beside his crib. There were days when she skipped meals because her children needed her attention. There were moments when she cried in the bathroom because she didn’t want her children to see her breaking down. She remembered feeding Akiro James at two in the morning. Then again at four. Then waking up before sunrise to prepare for work. She remembered carrying him while answering phone calls. Preparing meals with one hand while holding him with the other. Taking care of Nathalie while trying to recover physically and emotionally. No one saw those battles. No one saw the tears. No one saw the sacrifices. But she survived them. Every single one. Yumi looked at her sleeping son. The little baby who once fit perfectly in her arms was now a playful three-year-old boy. She kissed his forehead. “You have no idea how hard I fought for you.” Her eyes filled with tears. Not tears of sadness. But tears of pride. Because she realized something important. People often praised her for being a strong woman. But they didn’t know where that strength came from. Her strength was born in hospital rooms. In sleepless nights. In silent tears. In moments when she felt completely alone. She looked at the family photograph on her bedside table. A mother. A daughter. A son. Three people. One unbreakable bond. Before turning off the light, she whispered a quiet prayer. “Thank you for giving me the strength to survive.” As she lay beside her son that night, she finally understood something. She had never been abandoned. Because even in her darkest moments, she had discovered the strongest person she would ever know. Herself.
