Episode Thirteen - The letter he never read

499 Words
The house was unusually quiet. Akiro James was finally asleep after hours of asking questions about his favorite cartoon, while Nathania sat beside Yumi, carefully finishing her school assignment. For the first time in weeks, Yumi had a moment to breathe. She opened an old box hidden inside her cabinet. Inside were photographs, hospital documents, birthday invitations, and dozens of handwritten notes she had kept through the years. Then she found it. A folded letter. A letter she had written years ago but never had the courage to send. She slowly unfolded the paper and began reading. “To the man I once believed would stay forever… I never imagined that one day I would be raising our child alone. I never imagined that I would become both a mother and a father overnight. I never imagined that the woman who once dreamed of building a complete family would eventually learn how to survive with no one beside her. But here I am. Still standing. Still fighting. Still loving our child enough for both of us.” Her eyes filled with tears. The letter continued. “There were nights when I cried while our child was sleeping beside me because I didn’t know where I would get money for milk, diapers, and medicine. There were days when I wanted to give up because I was physically exhausted and emotionally broken. But every time I looked into those tiny eyes, I remembered why I had to keep going.” Yumi placed the letter on her lap. Years had passed. The pain was no longer as sharp as it used to be. She was no longer the same woman who wrote those words. She was stronger now. “Mama?” Nathania’s voice interrupted her thoughts. “Why are you crying?” Yumi quickly wiped her tears and smiled. “Nothing, sweetheart.” Nathania hugged her tightly. “You know you’re my superhero, right?” Yumi laughed through her tears. “A superhero?” “Yes. Because you do everything.” At that moment, Akiro James suddenly walked out of the bedroom, rubbing his sleepy eyes. “Mama, carry me.” Without hesitation, Yumi lifted him into her arms. One child wrapped around her neck. Another holding her hand. Her heart suddenly felt lighter. Maybe life hadn’t turned out the way she once imagined. Maybe she had lost people she thought would stay forever. But she realized something important. She wasn’t alone anymore. Her children had become her greatest source of strength. That night, she folded the old letter and placed it back inside the box. Not because she was still holding on to the past. But because she wanted to remember how far she had come. She turned off the lights and lay beside her children. Before closing her eyes, she whispered a promise to herself. “No matter what happens, I will keep choosing us.” And for the first time in a very long time, Yumi finally slept peacefully.
