Episode Three

388 Words
The second time Alyssa fell in love, she promised herself she would be more careful. She had already experienced betrayal once. She knew what it felt like to watch ten years disappear overnight. She knew what it felt like to rebuild herself from broken pieces. And yet, she still believed in love. The second man entered her life when she wasn’t looking for anyone. He was kind. He listened to her stories without judgment. He accepted her children and made her laugh again. For the first time in years, she felt safe. Slowly, the walls around her heart began to fall. She allowed herself to dream again. Maybe this time would be different. Maybe this time, she wouldn’t have to raise her children alone. But love after heartbreak is never simple. The scars from her past continued to follow her. Every delayed reply made her anxious. Every change in his voice made her overthink. Every moment of distance reminded her of the man who had once walked away. She tried to hide her fears, but they always found a way to appear. One evening, she noticed something had changed. His messages became shorter. His calls became less frequent. His laughter no longer sounded the same. “Are you okay?” she finally asked. There was a long pause. “I’m just tired.” Simple words. But sometimes, the simplest words carry the heaviest meaning. That night, Yumi sat alone on the front porch while her children slept inside. The cold evening air brushed against her skin as memories filled her mind. Was she overthinking? Or was she about to lose someone again? Her heart already knew the answer. She had spent so many years loving other people that she had forgotten how to love herself. A tear rolled down her cheek. She wasn’t afraid of being alone. She was afraid of saying goodbye again. Behind the closed door, her children slept peacefully, unaware of the storm inside their mother’s heart. Yumi looked up at the dark sky and made a silent promise. If another goodbye was waiting for her, she would survive it. Because she wasn’t the same woman she had been years ago. She was no longer just someone’s partner. She was a mother. And mothers learn how to keep going, even when their hearts are breaking.
