Chapter 3Power, Not Protection

888 Words
Elara’s POV The old man didn’t react the way I expected. No offense, no anger and no sharp reminder about respect. Instead, he simply looked at me like he was seeing something he had been searching for… and something that unsettled him at the same time. The room fell silent, then finally, he exhaled slowly and leaned back in his chair. “You’ve suffered.” His voice was quiet and heavier. “More than you should have.” For a second, my fingers shifted slightly at my side, but my expression didn’t change. The old man studied me carefully before speaking again. “I won’t let that happen another time.” Something about the certainty in his tone made the room feel different and somehow, that unsettled me more. “You are not alone anymore, Elara,” he continued. “Whether you accept it now or not doesn’t change the truth.” He paused briefly, then his sharp gaze locked onto mine. “You’re a Virelli.” The name settled heavily between us. “And as far as I’m concerned,” he added calmly, “you are the heiress of this family.” Beside me, Matteo finally spoke. “You’re under our protection now, Miss Virelli.” Protection? The word almost made me laugh. In my first life, nobody protected me, not Dominic, not the people I trusted and not even myself. And now suddenly, protection was being offered to me like something absolute. My gaze lowered briefly before returning to the old man. “I don’t need saving,” I said calmly. The old man nodded immediately. “I know. That’s not what this is.” Matteo stepped forward and placed a thick folder on the table in front of me. “Everything we recovered regarding your background,” he explained. “And everything legally belongs to you.” I opened the file slowly and saw birth records, hospital transfers, private investigations and financial accounts. The deeper I flipped through the pages, the colder my expression became. Numbers filled the pages endlessly. Enough wealth to rewrite an entire life. My jaw tightened slightly. “So you knew,” I said quietly without looking up. The chairman exhaled heavily. “Not immediately,” he admitted. “But once I found the truth, I made sure nobody else could reach you before I did.” A bitter thought crossed my mind. In another life, the Ashfords destroyed me without even realizing who I truly was. I closed the folder carefully. “And now?” I asked. The old man looked directly at me. “Now you come home.” “No.” The answer came instantly. Matteo stiffened slightly, but the chairman only watched me calmly. “I’m not here to hide behind your name,” I continued. “And I’m not interested in living under anyone’s protection.” Not anymore. I already knew what weakness cost. I had died from it once. “I’ll take the name,” I said quietly. “The resources. The access.” Then I lifted my eyes fully to his. “But I decide what happens next.” A long silence followed. Then slowly, the old man smiled proudly, his eyes liting up. “You’re exactly who I hoped you’d become.” Something flickered in Matteo’s expression too, I think he approved too. Not because I accepted the Virelli family, but because I refused to kneel for it. Matteo closed the file neatly. “It will take time to transfer everything properly,” he said. “Your identity, assets, legal recognition…” “How long?” I asked. “Several years.” I absorbed that quietly. Several years? In my first life, I didn’t even survive long enough to build a future. This time? I would use every second carefully. The chairman suddenly rose from his chair. Despite his age, his presence remained overwhelming. He walked toward me slowly before stopping at arm’s length, then he extended something toward me. A silver crest. The Virelli insignia. “This,” he said quietly, placing it into my hand, “is to ensure nobody ever puts you in that position again.” My fingers closed around the cold metal and for a moment, memories flashed through my mind. Dominic’s indifference, Isabella’s betrayal, the rain, the crash and my death. I lifted my gaze back to the chairman. This time, something inside me felt different. The old man turned slightly toward Matteo. “Show my granddaughter around.” Granddaughter. The word hit differently this time like something I had spent my entire life missing without realizing it. Matteo inclined his head immediately. “Of course.” I stayed silent but deep inside, something settled quietly into place. This world wasn’t asking me to beg for belonging, it was handing me power. And power? That, I understood perfectly. I turned toward the door as Matteo stepped ahead to open it for me. But as I walked past the tall glass panels lining the hallway, my reflection briefly caught my attention. Same face, but not the same woman. Not anymore because the next time I stood in front of Dominic Ashford, I wouldn’t be the wife he discarded. I would be the woman standing far above his reach. And this time? He would be the one looking up.
