CHAPTER FIVE

BEE’S POV I was shocked at what I met when I raced into the ICU room. I stood transfixed at the spot. Both the doctor and nurse were standing by his bedside where he laid still. “Doctor, is he okay?” I rushed to his side. He looked at me with sympathy. “He is going to be fine, but that is dependent on you.” I exhaled softly. At least he is still alive. But what is the Doctor implying? “On me, how so?” Dr. Wright cleared his throat before he continued. “Mr. Page woke up a couple of hours ago—” “He did?” I couldn’t believe it. “Yes, he did. And as I was saying, he instructed that you should be the one to administer his drugs to him and no one else, despite my persuasion.” His words knocked the wind out of me. I staggered backwards. I had to grab the bed railings to keep myself from falling backwards. “But why?” I whispered when I finally had a grip on myself. He shrugged, patted me, and made his way to the door in short strides. “Wait. Doctor, how do I know when he needs what?” I panicked at the thought of nursing my boss when trained nurses and doctors could easily pull it off without a fight. He gave me a kind smile and nodded towards Nurse Estella. “She’d guide you on what to do. Good luck, Miss. Bee.” I had never been more overwhelmed. The doctor slammed the door shut, and I was alone with Nurse Estella. “So Miss Bee, Mr. Page, has been sedated with a sleeping injection. He should be awake in about 3 hours from now. Make yourself comfortable. When he awakes, I’ll tell you what next to do.” With that, she left me looking more puzzled. I wanted to run away, but the other part of me yearned to give this man who gave me nothing but trouble and insults, some kindness whipping. That right there was the beginning of my undoing. I should have taken the first option, as at the time I had the chance, but my stubbornness kept me awake, watching his chest rise and fall with each heartbeat. The more I looked at his physique, the more I was sure I wouldn’t survive another day around him. He wasn’t only annoyingly handsome, but he was overly attractive. Gosh! He could make a sinner out of a nun. I struggled with taking my hungry eyes off his well sculpted frame. My folded hands found safety in my laps. It was the only way out of yielding to the temptation of running my hands over his honey skin. But a greater temptation lurked in the dark. ******************************************************* PAGE’S POV I watched her from the corners of my eyes. She seemed troubled by Dr. Wright’s words. If she was planning to run away, then I would have cut everything short and given her a hot chase. Though that would have frightened the hell out of her. The more reason why I decided to lie low and watch everything play out as planned. If it goes well, the better. If it doesn’t, then I’ll pull out this budding seed from the roots and be gone for good. No time for tears. It is a good thing she isn’t aware I am enjoying myself just watching her panic. But why is she looking at my arm like that? Does she have plans to take revenge on me for being such a terrible boss? It’s a good thing the surveillance camera is working and Dr. Wright has his eyes on everything going on at the moment, if anything goes south. Meanwhile, let me retire for the remaining hours. I do hope time flies by quickly. Though I would give a fortune just to stay up all day just staring at those blue eyes and yearning for the moment I would finally dig my fingers through her shiny blond hair. But till then… ******************************************************* BEE’S POV Exhaustion beat me to surrender. My head dropped severally on the bed where he laid. But I caught myself a couple of times before it was too late. I didn’t want him to catch me lying close to him. The plan was to keep vigil while he slept. However, it was the soft tap from the nurse that drew me out of my slumber. “Miss Bee, its already morning and Mr. Page has been up an hour ago.” I jolted up like a spring at her last statement. “Mr. Page, awake?” True to her word, I found a wide-eyed Mr. Page propped up with pillows supporting his back in a sitting posture. And he was staring down at me like a lion ready to pounce on its prey. I became dizzy that very instant. The color drained from my cheeks. “Oh my God.” I felt as light as a feather. My body began a slow descent towards the hard floor like that of withered leaves falling from a tree when a firm hand caught me. Nurse Estella’s tender arms caught me right in time. “Are you okay, Miss?” “Yes, I am, thank you.” my hand fell on my forehead. “I think I am only stressed. “Do sit, you need rest.” I turned to Mr. Page, a frown sat on his face. “Good morning, sir.” He groaned. Was he angry? I dare not ask. She checked his vitals. When she was done, she thrust a tray of various drugs at me. I gave her my “what for?” kinda look. For one, I hated them. Just the sight of them could make me puke. Plus, their awful smell always made me sick in the stomach. I couldn’t tell what she wanted me to do with it. “Please administer these to him in an hour.” She glanced at her silver wristwatch and shot a smile at me. I didn’t find it funny. On her part, she looked relieved to have me do her job. I contemplated if she wasn’t afraid I’d hurt him or give him the wrong dosage. Why they trusted me this much, I can’t say. I took the tray from her and placed it on the rolling table. “If an issue arises, reach me via the telecom.” She pointed to the yellow telephone hanging by the bedside. “Got it.” I frowned. I didn’t find my new job interesting. In fact, it sucked.
